Chapter One

Gia Martin trembled as she forced her feet forward. Her name had been chosen as the sacrifice. She’d be the new breeder, the new mate, the new wife for the three men standing before her. Not men. Shifters. It was the price the humans paid for their help in the war against the demons. Had the Shifters not come forward, had they not aided in the war, humans would have been completely annihilated. But Shifters only produced males. Even if a woman chose to be Turned, she was no longer able to carry children.

Hence their need for human women.

Her stomach turned as the nerves stirred the butterflies into a frenzy. She’d voluntarily entered her name in the drawing, but now she worried if she’d made the right choice.

Her decision had been made out of patriotism and necessity. Every year, the Shifters required a human to continue their species and carry the next in their bloodline. The woman chosen would live with them until she either chose to be Turned by one of them, decided it was too much and left—although that was rare—or died of old age. The only requirements of the volunteers were they had to be no younger than twenty-one, couldn’t have any children of their own, and had to be single. And as a single, childless, twenty-seven-year-old, she fit all those.

She knew what would happen the second she joined them in their home—she would be subjected to constant sex. Okay, subjected wasn’t really the right term. She’d heard rumors about these guys, about their talents, about their abilities to bring a woman pleasure. But those were rumors. She didn’t personally know anyone who’d been chosen as a wife, or breeder as those against these arrangements preferred to call them. Regardless of the terminology, she would now be promising herself to three men, volunteering her uterus to continue their species in exchange for their continued protection of not just her own clan and township, but all of humanity.

Gia smiled politely as she neared the men watching her, their own smiles not quite reaching their eyes. She knew the life she would lead would be filled with comfort, she’d never want for anything, and she’d have a baby of her own. She’d be a mother to an extraordinary child.

All she had to do in return was spread her legs as often as they requested, give them at least one child, and live creepily ever after with them. Of course, living with them until her death also meant continuously trying for more children. She’d be a baby making machine until her ovaries dried up. But even then, she’d be well taken care of.

Miss Martin, one of the men said, dipping his head and taking her hand to press a kiss to her knuckles. I’m Tegan, he said. She stared up in to his bright blue eyes, the dark eyebrows making his eyes even more striking. His hair was to his shoulders and dropped in front of his face when he bowed his head slightly. This is Zander, he pointed to the short-haired blonde with gray eyes, and this is Ryker.

Gia turned and tilted her head way back to look at Ryker. He stood at least three inches over the other men, standing at least six-foot-five or so. At five-foot-seven, it was rare that she felt short; in their presence, she felt petite. Ryker had dark brown hair, longer on the top, a modern and stylish fade on the sides. He was covered in tattoos, had several rings in his ears, and wore leather bracelets. Standing beside the other two, he seemed so out of place.

Both men dipped their heads as they were introduced, but Ryker’s eyes stayed glued to hers, his nostrils flaring once. Something about him made her feel like she was burning from the inside out. He set her on fire from the toes up. He was so not her type, but he’d just managed to change her taste in men with that smoldering look in his chocolate brown eyes.

Gia, she said. Please call me Gia.

Zander repeated the same move as Tegan, but Ryker just kept watching her, his eyes dipping to her full chest before raising back to her eyes.

Are you packed and ready? Tegan asked.

Yeah, she said, gesturing behind her at the taxi driver pulling the suitcases from the trunk of the cab.

She’d packed everything she owned except her furniture. There wasn’t much because she’d never been one to horde possessions, but her family pictures were important to her. They were all she had left of them, and she made sure they were the first things she’d packed.

Is there anything else you need for your stay with us? Zander asked, retrieving several bags from the trunk.

For her stay? He acted like she was on vacation. No. I think I’m okay for now.

Let us know if you need anything else, Tegan said, hefting a few more bags.

Ryker didn’t say a word as he grabbed the last of it, his eyes on her as he passed. She shuddered lightly, but grabbed the only suitcase left and followed them up the sidewalk to a large home settled deep in the middle of a thick press of forest. It had taken over an hour to get to their house from all the winding roads the driver had to take slowly or risk veering off the road.

Carrying her things upstairs, the men pointed out various rooms to her, showed her where the hall bathroom was, where each of them slept ‘in case she needed them at night’, then finally pushed open the door to the room she’d be staying in for the next fifty or more years.

Setting her bags on the floor, Ryker crossed the room and pulled her to his body roughly. His face was inches from hers, his mouth just a breath away. Holy shit. Was he going to take her right here, right now? With the other two watching them?

Maybe that was normal. She had so many questions for them later, but right now, she was trying to decide if she should push Ryker away or if she wanted him to touch her.

Yeah; she totally wanted him to touch her.

Ryker. Not yet. Let her settle in first, Tegan scolded.

Ryker bent his neck slightly and pressed a surprisingly gentle kiss to her lips. She’d thought he’d be forceful and aggressive. But his lips were so soft against hers, his hand gentle as he cupped the back of her head and held her there for a heartbeat.

When he released his hold on her, he backed away slowly, his eyes never leaving her face. Later, Zander repeated to him.

Ryker glanced at the other two, back at her, then turned and left the room, leaving her standing there watching his retreat, her breath coming faster than it should from just a kiss.

Uh, she stammered, turning to Zander and Tegan as they unpacked her belongings.

Don’t mind him. You’ll get used to it. He’s quiet, but he’s extremely passionate. He’s also loyal to a fault. After the ceremony tonight, he’ll dote on you for the rest of your life. Longer if you choose to Turn and stay with us.

If she chose to Turn, she’d get at least another fifty years on top of her normal life span. While not immortal, Shifters tended to live twice the life of a human. She could choose to spend two lifetimes with these men, although, at the moment, one was plenty. She had no idea whether they’d all get along or would learn to live as companions and parents.

Tegan had called Ryker passionate. He was definitely that. And he’d turned her on with barely a touch. What did that say about her? And what the hell would happen when it was time to consummate their union? Holy shit. Would she be with all three of them at once? The thought was scary…yet sexy as hell.

So, uh, what am I supposed to wear tonight? She hadn’t bought a wedding gown and didn’t have a lot of nice clothes. She’d been in retail for years and had worn slacks and nice shirts. That was the extent of her professional wear.

We’ll provide your gown. My mother and sisters will be here in a few hours to help you get ready. The ceremony will be held here so you don’t have to worry about leaving. But, there will be a lot of people here, Tegan said.

Mostly our kind, but a few human wives will be here, as well. They can help you with any questions we don’t have the answers to.

Like what’s it like to be married to multiple men? But she kept that to herself.

How long is the ceremony? she asked, discreetly tucking her panties in a drawer and shutting it quickly. Why, she didn’t know. They were going to see a whole lot more than her panties tonight. And there went those damn butterflies tearing up her stomach again.

Oh, she was no virgin, and she sure as hell was no prude. But, the most she’d ever done was a threesome with her ex-boyfriend and a college friend of hers. It was the first and last time she’d been with another woman. She’d just wanted to get that out of the way to decide if she was bisexual or just appreciated a perky pair of tits on a beautiful woman.

The ceremony is fairly short. Just some formal vows. But the party tends to last a few hours. You’re free to change into something more comfortable after the vows.

The party. He was talking about her wedding and reception. To three complete strangers. Not just one. Three. She would be married to three men.

So…how does all this work, exactly? she asked as she hung clothes on hangers, trying her damnedest to sound nonchalant.

Which part, honey? Tegan said. Her heart did a little stutter at his easy use of the pet name as he took the hangers and put them in the closet. They’d formed a good rhythm as if they’d done this sort of thing a dozen times. In fact, she was oddly comfortable with Tegan already.

There are three of you. What happens when…you know? Do you assign different days or something?

A deep chuckle sounded from down the hall. Ryker could hear them and was laughing at her, the jerk.

"No; we don’t assign different days. Tonight, it will be all three of us. Eventually, we’ll mark you as ours. For now, we’ll each
