Anna Gavalda grew up in the region of Eure-et-Loir in northern France, and holds a Master’s degree in Literature from the Sorbonne University in Paris. She is divorced with two children, and has had a varied career over the years, working as a French teacher, a veterinary assistant and a magazine columnist at various intervals. In 1992, she won the France Inter Competion for Most Beautiful Love Letter, and then started trying to get her work published after also winning a number of short story contests. Her first published work was a short story collection titled I Wish Someone Were Waiting for Me Somewhere, which was first released in 1999 and won the Grand Prix RTL-Lire. This was just the beginning of a highly successful writing career that has even led to two of her novels (Someone I Loved, 2002, and Hunting and Gathering, 2004) being adapted into films.
