About this ebook

When Fred and Harry are called away to a conference, the pair are convinced that they will have a few days of rest with not even Siren being able to cause havoc for them. But before they can leave, Fred has to check in on his brother, Ryan. Rather than delay Harry’s departure and keep him from the women that the detective intends to seduce, Fred drops him at the train station.

But nothing is ever simple for any of the troubled trio, not even taking a train No sooner than Harry finds an empty seat on the train, he discovers that the seat next to him is already occupied by the private investigator with a fetish for black leathers. With Siren on the train, Harry knows that the journey is going to be far from smooth, but when the train is hijacked by Derek Long, things are even more complicated than before.

Can Harry and Siren survive this latest run in with the so-called legitimate business man? Will Fred be able to help from the outside? Or is this the end of a beautiful friendship?

It’s not as bad as it looks

You should know before I start, that this isn’t as bad as it looks. Okay, Harry and I were lying face down on the floor of the train carriage, hands on heads surrounded by Derek Long and four heavily armed gunmen, but honestly, it isn’t quite as bad as it looks.

Take the train they said, it’ll be fun they said. Harry never did know when to keep his mouth shut.

Okay, it’s worse than it looks.

My name is Nicolette Mace, but most people know me as the Raven Siren and this was all kind of my fault.

Why is it that no matter where I go to try and make my name in certain circles, you both somehow end up there? Derek Long frowned down at us.

Just lucky, I guess, I shot back and one of the gunmen hit me in the spine with the butt of his gun. It hurts a lot more than the movies would have you believe, Son of a -

It was a rhetorical question, Siren. Long was never a man who liked to hear women cursing.

I know, I just wanted to break up the monotony of you monologing, I grunted, my back now throbbing. So the gunman hit me again, Seriously!

You should learn when to keep your mouth shut. Long tutted at me.

Where would the fun in that be? She’d deprive the world of so much of her useful sarcasm, Harry quipped next to me. It was now his turn to be hit with the butt of a gun, Okay, that does hurt.

See! I said turning my head so I could see Harry.

Are you both just trying to annoy me? Long scowled at the two of us.

There is a moment when you look at everything that is going on around you and think that what you are going to say next is going to determine the foreseeable future?

Well, if I had tendencies towards waxing lyrical or I spent my days philosophizing about the impact I have on the world around me, then maybe, just maybe, Harry and I wouldn’t be face down at the feet of one of our arch-enemies. I’ll take you back a little bit and you’ll see what I mean.

    Blue Piccadilly

There are very few days when the sun shines and it’s warm enough to eat outside in the early morning. My name is Detective Inspector Fred Barlow and I’d taken to spending every morning having breakfast with my partner, Harry Lee.

It had been a few months since his girlfriend, Sabrina had been murdered and a few months since my relationship with a certain female private investigator had become even more complicated.

Harry and I had struggled a bit to process all of this and it had nearly led to the end of our friendship.

Things weren’t as they had been before, but we were making the effort to move forward from the whole mess and breakfast was a part of it.

It was unusually quiet that morning in the city, especially when it was such a fine day. We sat outside Harry’s favourite bakery and munched on a selection of pastries that the girl who owned it had picked for us.

So have you decided to move on yet? Harry asked as he sipped at his coffee.

What do you mean, move on? I asked, frowning slightly.

Are you going to actually start dating women who aren’t Siren? he asked, sounding more than a little irritable.

I’m already doing that. I glowered at him.

No, you aren’t. What you’re doing is pining after Siren and pretending that the rest of the female species doesn’t exist. Harry said through gritted teeth.

I’m not pining after her. the day may have been beautiful as far as the weather goes, but it was going downhill fast
