About this ebook
John Allison
Born in a hidden village deep within the British Alps, John Allison came into this world a respectable baby with style and taste. Having been exposed to American comics at an early age, he spent decades honing his keen mind and his massive body in order to burn out this colonial cultural infection. One of the longest continuously publishing independent web-based cartoonists, John has plied his trade since the late nineties moving from Bobbins to Scary Go Round to Bad Machinery, developing the deeply weird world of Tackleford long after many of his fellow artists were ground into dust and bones by Time Itself. He has only once shed a single tear, but you only meet Sergio Aragonés for the first time once. John resides in Letchworth Garden City, England, and is known to his fellow villagers only as He Who Has Conquered.

Reviews for Giant Days #4

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Giant Days is a YA comic about a trio of first-year college students in the UK, who seem to find trouble wherever they go. I went into knowing it was the first volume of a series, but I was disappointed that it didn't seem to standalone at all. It reads like a series of vignettes and then ends just as a new one is starting. Each vignette seemed to be half baked and are therefore rather unsatisfying with their lack of meatiness. Furthermore, the characters were all too over the top for me. Perhaps fittingly, the illustrations are equally expressive to a fault. I have no desire to pick up any further volumes from this series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really liked this! The representation of university life was pretty much spot on, and I liked how they explored different facets of what to expect during your first few months. Can't wait to read more volumes. I enjoyed the artwork and how our characters were introduced. I'm excited to get to know them more and see how they develop and change due to university life.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved this graphic novel. Thanks to Littens for recommending it on Litsy.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5While I love some superhero comics as well as comic series that feature strife and conflict (Saga, Bitch Planet), it is so refreshing to read a comic series that features regular people doing regular things like panicking when they realize that university exams are nearing. But the best part is the friendship of these three girls, despite their different personalities, and how they would do anything for each other.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Instant favorite. Love these girls!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5LOVE THIS. Perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Lumberjanes who are getting older and want something more mature. And, at the risk of sounding like an a$$hole: I can't believe this was written by a guy. John Allison perfectly captures those first moments of freedom and last moments of "innocence" that are the late teens. I was never exactly any of these girls, but I can see my younger self in all of them.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Maybe it was all the set up for future episodes or maybe it was the British vibe, but this didn't quite make it for me. The characters were too big and lacked any dignity. Maybe future volumes will improve the stories.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5At one point in my life--25-30 years ago--I would have enjoyed this graphic novel. Now I am too old, the plot seems a little silly (or maybe just very typical and not original). My 8th grader was somewhat interested (he LOVES graphic novels), but this is not appropriate for him (too many drugs) and I also think he would find it boring (relationships).
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was funny, smart and ... many other good things. Simply loved it.Three main characters are hilarious and considering their huge differences in personality gives the book so many opportunities to create a funny situation.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Series Info/Source: This is the first volume in the Giant Days graphic novel series. There are 14 volumes in this graphic novel series and the series has been completed. I got a copy of this book as an early Christmas gift.Thoughts: In general I enjoyed this. It’s drawn in a cartoony style that is bright and colorful and easy to follow. The story follows three college freshmen girls (Susan, Esther, Daisy) and their exploits as they navigate college. The girls are incredibly different from each other but form an unlikely friendship. This is a cute read. The story is engaging and the characters are fun. I enjoyed this and thought it was a fun and quick read. The story is easy to follow and the characters are quirky but heartfelt. I enjoyed Esther’s ability to create undue drama even when she wasn’t trying to, it was pretty hilarious. My Summary (4/5): Overall this was a fun and quick read about some young women learning about themselves as they start their first year in college. It is humorous, quirky and heartfelt. The drawing is bright, colorful, and easy to follow. I am unsure whether or not I will continue the series because I enjoy more fantasy and adventure in my graphic novels (rather than more day in the life types of reads). However, this was very well done if you are looking for a contemporary fiction graphic novel series about some young women finding their (humorous) way through college.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This graphic novel follows 3 girls navigating life as college freshman and all the things that come with that. I was a little unsure if I would get into this story or not but it surprised me. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of these in the future!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A lighthearted delight.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5{First of 14 +2 Giant Days series; YA, graphic novel, life experience} (2015)This graphic novel collects the first four issues of a series centred on three girls who started at an unspecified university in England three weeks ago and is written from Susan's point of view. From the first page:Homeschooled and naïve, Daisy Wooton is 50% hair and 100% not ready for this mean old world. Esther De Groot is pale and interesting. Maybe too interesting. Her high school sweetheart lasted eleven days into her university career.I, Susan Ptolemy, am a human common sense silo. Without me, they'd probably both be dead, in jail or dead and in jail.(FYI - that last is just wishful thinking)This volume takes us through about a term in which the Susan meets someone unwelcome from her past, innocent Daisy goes to a party and gets high and Esther is put on a 'hot girls' website and the girls take their - very apt - revenge. As in the best comic series, the details in the artwork make it.Light and fun. I'll look for the rest of the series.3.75****
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A comic about three first-year college friends and their adventures. I loved it. Will absolutely be tracking down the other volumes.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It's got smart dialogue and I like the cute art style, but the humor just isn't my cup of tea. Not bad, but not for me.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A quick introduction to these eclectic and hilarious characters, helping to relive my good old university days....that i never really had. Am glad there is a series to follow becasue I want to see what else they get up to.
Quotes and snippets:
Esther's fever break dream, way to ruin a wine and cheese party!
Esther's boots! Totally wprth the low bank account!
"Why wont my brain stop talking to me?.......[knock, knock].......This had better be the sandman."
Love the signs in the community kitchen. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Susan, Esther, and Daisy started university and became great friends and now they are using their newfound freedom to reinvent their characters, leaving their old personas behind, or at least try to. I really like the characters and the situations they get into feel real for their ages. The art is simple, but is very expressive and fits the purpose. Very enjoyable read and I will have to try another installment.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Terrific collection of the first four issues. Bright, smart and funny stories about three young women at a provincial uni. I will happily read more of these.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Giant Days is the story of three women attending university and sorting out their love lives, their academics, and themselves. Daisy is a sheltered, sweet young woman who moderates between the dramatic and beautiful Esther de Groot and the cynical, smoking Susan Ptolemy. Giant Days takes place through a series of vignettes - one dealing with the unfortunate arrival of Susan's arch-enemy, who both Daisy and Esther think is cute; Esther being featured on a misogynistic website, and Daisy's flirtation with a friend on her 18th birthday.
A perfect slice-of-life comic about university, this will take almost everyone back to their college days. The characters are hilarious and realistic - the beautiful drama queen, the sheltered naif, and the caustic, down-to-earth one.
Additionally, the art style is bright, funky, and dynamic. Each panel was a delight to pore over. The people are very well done and the colors pop from the page.
A very good read! - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A comic series following the adventures of three first year university students in the first few months of academic life. It's cute and funny in spots but I wasn't completely swept away by it. I'll give it another volume to knock my socks off before I designate as lovely but not something I feel the need to be sucked into.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In this comics collection, three girls room next to each other at university and have become one another's best friends. The navigate university, parties, significant others, getting the flu, and so on--all the stuff that feels so important in college, because it *is.* I just loved this to bits and will be reading all the rest of it. Recommended.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story is insubstantial, but I really do love the fun tone, dialogue, characters and art.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5My first adult graphic novel. It was cute and a nice time out from my other reads. I'm curious how things continue so I will move on to the second volume. 3.5 ⭐️
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this more then I originally thought I would. It has a beautiful art style that I really liked, it also made me laugh a few times.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5If Archie were written by smart feminist college students.
