Focus - Michael T. Robbins
Introduction
We are living in the age of distractions. It is usually called the information age but when we have access to unlimited information and we don't know how to manage that information, it soon turns into nothing but the age of distractions. Everywhere we go we are surrounded by people and objects that seek our attention.
Hundreds of channels on the TV, all try to attract our attention and stop us from changing the channel; Don't go anywhere, we'll be right back!
On the internet there are millions of websites, thousands of blogs, hundreds of forums, dozens of social networks, and more than a billion cute cat pictures, all demanding our attention. Advertisements seek only a few seconds of our attention to try and sell us a singular idea; buying their product will make us happy. And when advertisements scream at us from every possible corner; the TV, magazines, newspapers, online, on our phones, in our email, in the snail mail, on our doorsteps, and even on our cereal boxes; the few seconds add up to be quite a substantial time of our day, week, month, year and life. And don't even get me started on the best candidate for the 'boon or curse?' debate ever; the smart phone!
Add to this all the people we have to communicate with, like our bosses, colleagues, and salespeople, and also the people that we care about, our family and friends, our children and even our pets, and it is not surprising that more and more people are suffering from problems such as attention deficit disorder, acute anxiety syndrome, panic attacks and depression.
In the age of distractions, it is getting harder and harder to live our life without suffering from severe stress. While we have gained a lot through the information revolution, we have lost an important thing; our ability to focus.
Without focus we live merely reacting to the latest stimulation, liking the latest picture of our friends' cute baby and retweeting the latest trending hashtag. There is such an overwhelming amount of information seeking our attention that we lose focus from the really important areas of life. We stop living and instead merely
