    THE THREE WHIMS

    Brittany cringed as Shep circled classified advertisements with a red-ink ballpoint, signifying that he harbored another impulse. Lately, the impulses had been cresting as often as the tides. She had barely recovered from Whim #1 – Shep’s purchase of a bicycle for each of them. There is a medical explanation for these sudden impulses occurring in the middle years—something about a last-ditch attempt to cram a lifetime into the remaining half of a lifetime. 

    It always began with an earth-shattering dictum in Shep’s nonchalant manner. I’d like to have a camper. I’m going to call these numbers.

    Aren’t we even going to mull it over? The flurry appalled Brittany, who monitored the waste of time as if it were her checkbook. 

    What is there to mull? Shep dialed the phone numbers and asked a few pointed
