Introduction
That Moment of Ecstasy
Imagine that you are at a concert where your favorite artist is working the crowd into a frenzy of excitement with a medley of his greatest hits. Each song builds upon the other – the bass is thumping, the electric guitar is shredding and the audience is on its feet, reveling in the music.
The set is about to end with cheers and shouts and arms waving in the air. But it doesn’t end, because the artist remains at center stage and is now lit by a solo spotlight. He is choosing to end his show – not with a rousing anthem, but with one of his most beloved ballads.
He croons acapella, eyes closed, his face lifts heavenward. Suddenly the audience falls silent, realizing that they are experiencing something special.
The artist continues, his voice climbing a subtle slew of chords before reaching a sweet crescendo.
Arms outstretched, he holds the final note and lets it soar to the rafters and fill up the house.
The song falls off, but the audience stands silent in rapt attention. A full few seconds pass before the artist returns his arms to his sides and releases the crowd to its raving applause.
In this same way, imagine a violinist, caressing the strings, lovingly stroking her wand across the instrument or a pianist passionately closing his piece, fingers taut and holding the notes until he is good and ready to let them go.
Or think of the stage actor who hits just the right chord of indignation, spewing his character’s rage so viciously, so eloquently that the audience is left breathless and completely absorbed by the end of the scene.
These are magical moments, to be sure. But, there is a method to this madness. The performer is not only aware of these moments but is striving toward them. The climax is not always just a random occurrence. For many artists it is a calculated and well-rehearsed feat.
