Introduction
What is an Insistent Writer?
Over the years, I have watched my sons love and live America’s favorite pastime – baseball. It was not what I‘d imagined for them because I’d grown up watching football and secretly dreaming of the day they would take the field and slam an opposing quarterback with a punishing hit. Yes, I am that much of a football fan.
Because my older son was a pitcher and my younger son was a power hitter, I have seen the game from opposing vantage points and was quickly able to understand the game and learn its intricate rules of strategy. From pick-offs and wild pitches to breaking balls and when to throw them as a pitcher or let them go by as a batter -- ask me anything about the game and I will be able to answer.
What I have learned most is that baseball is a game of failure. A player who earns a .300 slugging percentage – meaning, he got a hit just three out of every 10 times he appeared at the plate -- is considered a quality, career hitter.
That’s three – just three hits out of 10! Seven other times at the plate, the player was unsuccessful in getting on base because he either hit into a play on the field or he struck out.
That’s a lot of disappointment.
Pitchers experience their own brand of challenges on the mound. They need to throw just three strikes to retire the batter and send him slumping back to the dugout. Sounds
