    The Way Back

    Chapter One

See ya tomorrow, Red. Conner Harris lifted his glass of scotch and soda to acknowledge his buddy, Brice, going out the door. It was the evening before graduation, and his frat house had put together a before-dinner gathering to include friends and family. It was only because of Mr. Wise’s insistence that he’d joined and become a resident. Not that he hadn’t made good friends who would, undoubtedly, be of benefit in the years to come.

Conner turned his attention back to the raven-haired beauty across the room who was talking to his mother, Brooke. Tyler Alverez had stolen his heart the minute she walked into his advanced calculus class. It was much to the chagrin of a long line of young women hoping to do that very thing. And now, here they were. He was graduating with a PhD in Operations Research and Financial Engineering and Tyler with her Masters, each of them with honors. He smiled at the thought that they would both be working in Orlando. No need to separate and carry on a long-distance relationship. How had such a woman of principles stolen his heart? She’d informed him from the get-go there would be no apartment sharing unless he put a ring on her finger.

So this is it? His favorite teacher and mentor interrupted his thoughts.

Professor Steinman. I’m so glad you could make it tonight. He reached out to shake hands. Yes, I guess this is it.

Will you leave right after graduation tomorrow? Professor Steinman asked.

Conner chuckled. No, my family is taking advantage of this trip and making it a vacation. Tyler has some loose ends to tie up, and I’ve convinced Mr. Wise that I need a couple of weeks before I join the staff. Mom and Dad are driving my car back and we’ll take a flight out Wednesday afternoon.

Sounds like you have things laid out nicely. Something in Professor Steinman’s eyes said there was more, but he smiled politely and kept whatever it was to himself.

It’s going to be different, Conner said. I just hope I can meet expectations.

I have no doubt you’ll do well, whatever your endeavors. He patted Conner’s arm. How about lunch one day before you go––say Main Street? My treat.

Professor Steinman was one of the difficult things about leaving school. In all honesty, he’d been more like a father figure. I’d like that a lot. Let’s make it Tuesday, after my family is gone. Are you free at eleven-thirty? We can maybe beat the crowd.

We’re between semesters, my boy. I am nothing but free for a few weeks.

    That you are. Conner grinned.

Well, I’ll leave you to it for tonight. Nancy is waiting with dinner.

Conner reached out to shake his hand again. Thanks for coming. I’ll look forward to Tuesday.

Conner saw his dad, Mitch, in amicable conversation with the father of one of his frat brothers, and then glanced around the room at the familiar and happy faces. His parents had arrived yesterday, to be a part of this evening’s festivities. John and Mallory Wise would be flying up in their private jet tomorrow morning and bringing his Nana and Grandpa.

A hint of insecurity ran through him, landing in his stomach. That wasn’t like him. He was a favorite of both faculty and his peers. Mr. Confidence––that’s who he was. So why the nerves? He looked forward to later this evening when he could be alone with Tyler. She was the one place he could land and be brutally honest. Truth of it was she gave him no option. She read him like a book and called him on any show of ego or pretense.

In the two weeks after graduation, he would need to find an apartment in Orlando and be ready to start work. Tyler had been hired by Landers & Landers as an apprentice architect in downtown Orlando. Her best friend, Lizzie, was already set up in a two-bedroom to share with Tyler. He was certain Tyler was the woman he would spend the rest of his life with, but commitment would have to wait until he was settled and confident in his new role as the adopted heir to the Wise empire.

He felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to his father, an older version of himself.

You look deep in thought, Mitch said.

Conner shrugged. Just contemplating what needs to be done before I start work.

    And a few nerves?

He nodded. Is it that evident? I thought I was making a good show of it.

His father smiled and gave him a knowing nod. School can become a comfort zone. Even though you’ve spent your summers working at the office, it’s different when you’re stepping into the shoes of management.

I’m actually surprised. I thought I would slip into place like a well-worn glove.

It’s a natural reaction, Son. But you’re well prepared and John is a good man to work for. He’ll make sure you’re ready before he leaves you on your own.

Conner took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Thanks, Dad. Just keep reminding me of that.

Mitch reached out and squeezed Conner’s arm. That I can do. Now, how about dinner? Don’t we have reservations?

Conner checked his watch. Yep, we need to round up the girls and head out.

I love your mom, Tyler said as she snuggled up close to Conner on the couch in her apartment. She is so sweet.

Yeah. She’s come a long way since her accident.

Tyler pulled back to look at him. Meaning?

Conner shrugged. She kinda pulled away from the family to do her own thing. It’s just been in the years I’ve been in school that she and my dad have been close.

They must have been close before that or they wouldn’t have gotten married.

I suppose. I was too young to know much about that. All I remember is Dad either out of town flying for Mr. Wise or on the golf course. My mom was off with her friends or working on a painting.

But, they seem like such strong Christians.

They are now, and I assume they were early in their marriage, especially when my dad was flying for missions.

Tyler picked at a fingernail. I guess that explains why you find so many excuses for not going to church with me.

Conner contemplated his answer before speaking. I believe there’s a God, sweetheart. We just haven’t made much of a connection. Seems like I’ve done pretty well leaning on my own decisions.

She looked up and placed her hand on his face. You should know I’m praying He will prove otherwise, and that will probably spell trouble in your life.

He smiled and leaned down to kiss her gently. Whatever you feel necessary, my love, as long as it keeps you by my side.

She slipped both arms around his neck and pulled him toward her for a long and tender kiss. You can’t get away from me that easy, Mr. Harris. And God isn’t giving up on you either.

The aroma of coffee and his mother’s sweet pastries greeted him as Conner came down the stairs of his parents’ home. It was originally his grandparents’ house on a large horse farm. His grandfather had raised a number of champions here. Struggling with his health, he’d eventually convinced Conner’s dad to take over. Grandpa and Nana had built a new place at the end of the acreage. It was far enough away for Grandpa to consider himself retired but still close enough to keep his finger in the pie.

Conner would be picking up Tyler this morning to spend the weekend at the farm. They would drive back to Orlando Sunday evening for her to start her new job the next day.

Mrs. Wise had taken on the task of finding him an apartment, and he would be moving in some of his things after dropping Tyler off, and before he headed back out to the farm for a few more days. He was a bit disappointed that his apartment was such a long distance from Lizzie and Tyler and the office where he would be working, but Mrs. Wise had insisted the location was more appropriate for a man of his position. Who was he to rock the boat? Besides, it meant he didn’t have to take on the job of finding one himself, and Mrs. Wise had seen to all the furnishings and decor. All he needed to bring was his clothes and a toothbrush.

Good morning, sweetheart, his mother greeted as he walked into the familiar kitchen. Ready for some coffee?

Please. He reached out to give her a quick kiss on the cheek.

    I have breakfast ready.

Conner climbed onto a stool at the kitchen bar. Bring it on. He reached for the cup of coffee she offered and took a quick sip. Is Dad already out?

His mother laughed. He’s getting his morning chores done early and ready for the weekend. He’s so looking forward to teaching Tyler how to ride.

Conner grinned. I hope I can still stay on a horse. It’s been a long time.

She placed a plate of scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon and a sweet roll in front of him. It’s like riding a bicycle. It won’t take you long to be comfortable in the saddle. I remember the first time your dad brought me to the farm. He had me on a horse first thing in the morning. Nana got me into a hot tub that night to loosen up the sore muscles.

I hope Tyler takes to it as well as you did.

I’m sure she will do fine, and we’ll look forward to having you both out here as often as possible.

Conner nodded as he savored a bite of his sweet roll. That would be nice, but I’m not sure how much time I’m going to have, starting a new job and learning the ropes.

A look of concern crossed his mother’s face as she leaned against the other side of the counter. Just don’t let your work consume you, Conner.

But with all Mr. Wise has done for me, I feel obligated to give him my best.

She hesitated before saying more. It’s a wonderful opportunity you’ve been given, I won’t deny you that. But John and Mallory don’t own your soul. Be true to yourself, Son.

Conner looked up and searched his mother’s face. That’s funny. That’s exactly what Professor Steinman said to me when we went to lunch.

    What’s that?

He told me to be true to myself.

Conner stepped out of the elevator on the top floor of Wise Enterprises. Mimi, the receptionist looked up and gave him a warm smile.

Good morning Mr. Harris. They’re waiting for you in the boardroom.

Moisture broke out on his upper lip. Great way to start. Show up late.

I’m sure there will be a little flexibility on your first day, she reassured him.

I’m afraid I misjudged how long my commute would be. Is traffic always this bad?

    She nodded. Always.

Wish me luck, he said as he started down the hall.

Mr. Wise looked up as Conner stepped into the room. Conner, there you are. Grab some coffee and we’ll get started.

Conner felt the eyes of everyone in the room on him as he poured a cup and took a quick gulp. He hadn’t bothered with breakfast before leaving his apartment, not that it got him here on time. He could have shrunk into his shoes and been more comfortable. He sat down next to Mr. Wise and the rest of the group began to settle into the chairs around the table.

I believe all of you remember Conner from when he worked here during summers but I’ll go around with introductions for his sake.

There were nods of recognition and agreement around the table.

    You remember my secretary, Louise.

Welcome back, Conner. She gave him a warm smile.

Frank Bronowski is chief of Accounting, Mr. Wise continued. He’ll keep you on budget.

    Frank chuckled.

Art Edwards is our chief of Engineering.

Art nodded. I believe we did some work together last summer. Appreciated your suggestions. Welcome aboard.

Conner already like these two men.

Of course you know Jack, chief of Sales

Jack had gone to school with his parents and was like an uncle. He winked at Conner. Been looking forward to this, buddy.

And Sal Argenello keeps our expenses in check as chief of Purchasing. He nodded in Conners direction.

Melody Ingram heads up our Human Resources.

You’ll be coming with me to fill out tons of paperwork. She smiled, Glad you’ve finally joined us.

Brittney Dalworth is our plant manager. She keeps our lines of operation running smooth as glass.

Brittney ducked her head. Thank you, sir.

And Alex Lamborn is our general manager. You’ll be spending a lot of time with Alex. He’ll teach you all there is to know about running this operation.

Alex gave him a wide toothy grin. We’ll have you up to speed in no time.

Conner was instantly drawn to his easy manner. He was confident they would work well together.

Now, with that taken care of, let’s get on with reports. Frank, would you get us started?

Conner listened intently grossly aware of how little it all meant to him. He had a lot to learn.

Conner spent an hour in Human Resources filling out the promised mountain of paperwork before returning to Mr. Wise’s office.

Louise looked up as he approached. She had been nothing but kind to him during his summers working here, but he knew she guarded her boss with the authority of a general. Her professional dress reminded him of the way his mother had dressed when she was spending most of her time with Mrs. Wise and friends. Tasteful wealth.

All signed up? she said with a smile.

I hope so. Melody wasn’t kidding when she said a ton.

Government regulations. You know how that goes.

I’m beginning to. Is Mr. Wise in?

Yes, he’s waiting for you. She picked up the phone, Conner’s back and ready to go to work, sir. She replaced the phone. You can go on in.

Mr. Wise walked toward him as he came in the door. Come on in, son. Have a seat.

Conner sat in one of the two chairs in front of the desk, and Mr. Wise sat in the one beside him.

So, what do you think, my boy? Ready to jump in?

Yes, sir, I believe so. He wiped his hands on the arms of the chair. Mr. Wise––

Call me John. We’re coworkers here.

Well––John. I apologize for being late this morning. My apartment is quite a distance from here and I misjudged the time and traffic. It won’t happen again.

Mr. Wise shook his head. I told Mallory that was too far from the office. She fancies herself the social captain of this ship and, for the most part, I let her do her thing. Look for something closer, unless you’re attached to that place.

Conner breathed a sigh of relief. Not at all, sir. I’d rather be closer to the city. Tyler and her roommate found a nice place not far from here.

Tyler is a nice young lady and sharp as a tack.

Yes, sir. He smiled thinking about the protests she’d voiced when he told her where Mallory had him set up.

Well, if there’s nothing available there, you can ask Louise. She’ll help you find something closer.

I’ll get on that right away. He was surprised at the weight lifted from his shoulders and he sat up a little taller.

Now, don’t expect to know everything all at once. I’d like for you to work in each of the departments. No better way to learn how to manage a business than to have a complete understanding of how everything works together to give us the final product. We’ll get you started with Alex this week, and he can give you an overall view. Then we’ll send you to Art in Engineering.

Conner liked the sound of that, and the knots in his stomach began to relax.

Mr. Wise stood. Shall we go? Alex is just down the hall.

Alex was on the phone and nodded at John and Conner as they stepped into his office. He jotted a couple of notes on a pad. Got it. I’ll overnight that, and you’ll have it in your office tomorrow––great, looking forward to it.

Larry, in the Philadelphia office, he said to John as he hung up the phone. They’re ready to start a first run on those new digitals. We should plan a trip up there next week.

I’ll leave that for you to arrange, he said to Alex and then turned to Conner. May as well start getting you acquainted with the other offices.

Yes, sir. Conner remembered all the trips his father had taken as the corporate pilot for Wise Enterprises. Now he was going to be making those trips. In a way, he wished his dad was still the pilot.

    Alex, John continued, "you’ll be
