    CHAPTER I

Troy Robbins wanted to have some fun. He had spent the last five years married to a woman who apparently didn’t know the meaning of fun. At first, Alice seemed like fun. In the beginning Troy and Alice had fun. They went places and saw things. They went to parties and overall enjoyed life together. It wasn’t until they had been married a year that Troy noticed a change. He now saw that it was about that time she had dropped her façade. Alice was only having Troy’s kind of fun because of Troy. Alice had a different approach to fun than Troy did. For Alice, fun was sitting around the house watching TV or reading. Troy was too active for that. He wanted to go and do; she wanted to sit and stay. Troy held out as long as he could. He felt he had made a commitment to Alice and wanted it to work, but after five years, he was sure it wasn’t going to and told her so. To his surprise, she wasn’t all that upset about it. She actually seemed relieved that he wouldn’t be around bugging her. He was divorced and on his own once again.

Troy sat in his apartment looking at the bare walls and wondering what to do for the afternoon. He was free from work and was in a new town. After breaking up with Alice, he had accepted a job in the small coastal North Carolina town of Libby Shores. To his surprise, he found a job writing software at a small but very profitable company located at the beach. He thought it would be a nice change after living in the city for so long. At thirty years old, he thought it was time for a change. It was a new adventure for him, and he liked adventure.

Troy ran along the sand on a Sunday afternoon. It was how he thought. Every afternoon he would suit up and go for a run. Troy had tried running in the small town, but there weren’t sidewalks everywhere and more than once he had nearly run out in front of a car, so now the beach was his respite. Troy moved in the late winter, and now the weather was warming, and he was aching to spend more time outdoors. He had settled into his new job and apartment. He had not made any real efforts to explore the social life of the area because he wanted to get everything else in place first. Now Troy felt those things were taken care of and he wanted to have some fun.

Troy ran along the edge of the water. After stopping for a few minutes to catch his breath, Troy walked and drank from a plastic water bottle. When he looked along the beach, he spotted three girls watching him from their towels spread on the sand. Never being shy Troy didn’t hesitate to walk up to them and strike up a conversation. Alice had once told Troy that it would be better for him to be a little more reserved around people. Now Troy saw that as her way to keep him from having fun. It was a new town, but it was still the same old Troy.

    Hello, ladies!

The trio was comprised of the usual make up. A wannabe supermodel type, her pretty but snotty sycophant friend, and a slightly overweight girl. Everyone has seen a trio like this. The alpha rules the group. Her overly expensive couture hides her insecurity. What she lacks in personal confidence she makes up for with money, mean and men. She is a daddy’s girl because daddy has the money. The sycophant follows the alpha in a puppy dog fashion. Careful not to upstage her, the sycophant exists only in the afterglow. The third is usually the only normal one. Thrown in the group for no other reason than she knows how to get things done, she can’t even explain to herself why she is there, but she always is. They treat her like a servant and content themselves with the notion that they are doing her a favor by letting her hang around with them. The snotty one lowered her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose and surveyed Troy from head to toe. Troy had seen this situation many times before. He awaited the inevitable snide comment.

Keep running, dude, there’s nothing here for you.

    Troy’s smile never waned.

My name is Troy Robbins, and I just moved here a few weeks ago. I was wondering if you could tell me where things happen around here. I mean I haven’t even found the good bars yet!

Troy ended with a laugh that only one of the three responded to. The third of the trio started to speak but was cut off by the sycophant.

"We aren’t your tour guides, dude. Maybe you should just keep running. You might catch a clue
