    Chapter One

    ––––––––

Tyler Stevens strode into the main building of the studio lot and sighed. I’ve finally come home.

For the first time in five years, he felt like he’d come home. He’d come to the studio for a table reading, and his existence righted. This is where I belong.

    Thank God.

He loved the hustle and bustle of the movie set. He needed the action and order. Plus, he needed to create.

When he strode through the cavernous building to the reading room in studio C, he spotted familiar tables set up in a square configuration. He’d worked for the last three months on his lines, capturing the essence of his character. Getting the chance to play a gay man in a cute rom-com style role was a dream role for him. He tended to get typecast as the jock, and while this was a jock-style role, he could be himself—a gay man.

He sat on one of the chairs and opened his script. Light filtered through the skylights and the dust floating through the air sparkled as it swirled. The scent of sweat hung in the air, and someone had scratched initials into the table. He chuckled to himself. Some things never changed...people liked to create graffiti.

As he waited for the rest of the cast to arrive, he flipped through the pages and read his lines again. He knew the part backwards and forwards, but he still worried he’d forget what to say.

Emme Crain joined him at the table. How are you? She slapped his arm. "I’m so glad to see you. I thought you’d checked out of Hollywood for good."

    Nah. He hugged her.

Did you have a good time? she asked as she sat beside him. You were gone so long.

I was, but I grew, learned, and realized I love to act. I love to read, too, but I need to create. He shrugged. I have a degree in theater now, though, so there’s that.

Good for you. She plopped her script on the table. I’m playing your best girl friend.

Nice. He’d hoped they’d get someone fun for the role.

Did you see who is playing the other lead? Rory Naquin. She elbowed him. "He’s very indie, but so hot."

I think I know him. In fact, his blood heated as he thought about Rory. How’s his craft? The last he heard, Rory was playing boyfriend types and tv movie hunk roles.

He’s strong with showing emotion. She nodded and opened her script. He’ll be good in this project because he’s got to be sensitive. He does that well.

Good. The role of Spencer did involve a lot of sensitivity. Ty’s character, Greg, wasn’t so sensitive. He sort of blundered along, not realizing he was gay, but knowing he wanted to be with Spencer. Once Spencer admitted he needed a date, Greg stepped right in and confessed his attraction. If Rory was still as sexy as Ty remembered from when they were teens, Ty wouldn’t have any problems pretending affection for him.

Everyone. Mo Ruston, the director, strode up to the table. Where are my leads? I see Ty, but I don’t see Rory. Emme? Yes...Where is Nathan? He applauded. I need you to be on time people.

Nathan rushed to join them. Rory is stuck in the parking lot. I just saw him. He sat beside Emme. He was running for his life from fans.

Fans? Ty snorted. He’d never had to run away from anyone in a parking lot. Maybe Rory burst onto the scene more than he’d realized and had vociferous fans?

Ty fiddled with his script. I hope the fans don’t interfere with his performance. He sounded pompous, but he didn’t care. He believed in his craft and wanted to give the role his best.

He’ll be fine. Nathan opened his script. The fans are for Rory’s family band. Rory hates the crush of fans—especially since they aren’t interested in him, but they all want to get to his older brother.

Yes. Ty dipped his head in acknowledgement. He’d forgotten all about the family band. He didn’t see the attraction, but the fanbase for their band was rabid.

Rory, so good of you to join us. He applauded briefly then gestured to the chair. Sit. We’re late.

Rory hustled over to the empty
