Little White Lies

Touching Down in a Strange and Beautiful New World

Like Homer Simpson says of donuts, we must ask ourselves the question: is there anything Maya Hawke can’t do? She carefully juggles a career as an acclaimed singer/songwriter alongside starring in shorts, features and TV series, and working as a model. She’s made a huge imprint as one of the stars of beloved Netflix fantasy serial, Stranger Things, while she also snagged a small role in Quentin Tarantino’s history-bothering dirty bomb, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. We were keen to speak to Hawke for this issue inspired by Asteroid City to get a sense of what it’s like for a first-timer to dive headline into the world of Wes.

LWLies: What was your first encounter with Wes Anderson?

Hawke: God, it’s hard to remember a first encounter. He just feels so much a part of the landscape of cinema that I grew up in – the landscape of contemporary movies. Especially as a kid, he somehow managed or . I might have watched not knowing who Wes was to be honest. And I have then gone back and watched it again later when I got a bit older. It goes withiut saying that I’m a huge fan. I struggle with the word ‘fandom’ a little bit as it infers something of a community around a celebrity or a subject matter. And I don’t feel like I have ever been part of a ‘fan club’, but I’ve definitely always been a fan.
