Chapter One

I was house-sitting for a couple, old friends of my parents, while they were away on vacation. It was a country house, isolated, surrounded by mountains and forests. I was terrified to have to spend my first night there alone. My boyfriend, Rick, and my best friend, Sheila, had promised to join me for the weekend, but couldn’t make it until late on Friday night; Rick because of work and Sheila because of an important test she was taking for college.
