    Author’s Note:

This is a short, humorous romantic tale with silly characters. Something to read in between your more serious reads.

    CHAPTER ONE

Thirty-four-year-old rancher Abe Battle threw his saddle on the porch of his two-story, West Texas home. So what did you wanna talk to me about?

Edgar Mason squinted underneath his cowboy hat, Abe glad it hid Edgar’s grotesque scars that covered his once-handsome face.

About five years ago, he and his sister Ronnie got burned in a house fire and both carried monstrous wounds from the ordeal.

Want something to drink? Abe threw his suede cowboy hat on the couch and grabbed the half-empty can of Red Bull off his coffee table. What about something to eat? He slurped the drink, the artificial cranberry taste crowding his taste buds.

You’ll never change will you, Abe? Edgar’s scarred lips formed a scowl. Ever since high school you thought you were better than everyone and you still do.

Do I? Abe relaxed on the plaid couch and plopped his cowboy boot feet on the table. You’ve never liked me have you? He sucked juice from his lips. Some even say you’re jealous of me.

Why would I be jealous? Edgar stood wide-legged on the patchwork area rug, his black cowboy boots scuffed on the toes. Because you get everything handed to you? You never worked for anything.

    Abe snickered. Is that right?

You sure as hell didn’t work for this ranch. Edgar walked around the moss
