About this ebook

Scroogerton, a billionaire miser, thinks he has Christmas all figured out. Furthermore, he doesn't think much of the holiday spirit. No amount of Christmas lights, peppermint egg nog, or bright cheer can dissuade him of his ugly Scroogerton ways. Can angels dissuade him of his habit of wealth-splaining?

    Preface

Glittery ornaments, gifts under the tree, reverberating carols, delicious pumpkin spice and much, much more!

    Ahhh—the delightful Christmas season.

Such a wonderful time full of cheer. Such a magnificent period to revisit inspirational stories.

You might think you already know a story like the one on these pages. You might think you know the moral of this message. You might think knowing good from bad is so very easy.

You probably don’t pay close attention to the missive anymore. It’s become so old hat that you take it for granted. It may be nothing but just a quaint little holiday story for you.

But, fellow life traveler, do yourself a favor—re-consider it closely. You may be surprised at its deepness and timelessness.

    Chapter 1

Nezer Scroogerton the third was very, very, very rich. A billionaire many, many, many times over. He’d like you to know that even though he inherited a few puny millions, he, in all his oh-so-very-shining brilliance, made his fortune grow.

He absolutely hated it when people didn’t give him his due. When they had the audacity to assume he was wealthy just because of an inheritance. NOOOOO! he’d roar. He’d snarl with all his might that his money was a product of hard work and smarts. He felt deep inside that people who supposed such a blasphemous thing did it because they were too slothful and incompetent to make their own fortunes, so they tried to excuse themselves by not giving Scroogerton credit for his shrewd business skills.

What rubbish! he’d often say about rebuke from his critics.

And so here he was—at this precise moment—at the headquarters of his corporation where the Christmas ornaments put him in a foul mood. Christmas was bittersweet for him. On the one hand, he sold much stuff at his department stores and that would put him in great spirits. But on the other hand, he’d have to give his employees the day off.

    Harrumph! Lazy employees!

He just couldn’t understand why the people who worked for him didn’t rush to him and beg to work on that day. They’re just not motivated. No work ethic, he said to himself. That’s why I’m rich and they’re not. They deserve their poverty.

Of course, he was totally opposed to paying them time and a half. In fact, he was demanding that a heart-less politician, in his deep pockets, introduce a bill against paying employees what he thought was too much money for services rendered. The soul-sellout legislator suggested they call it—the Compassion Work Bill. The soul-less politician would tell his constituents that what he was proposing was for small businesses to be able to survive. To be able to give their workers more opportunities to work.

This is how Mr. Slick Tongue would spin and frame this abhorrent greed-grab. This is what he and Scroogerton would tell themselves so they’d be convinced they were doing the right thing. Because who wants to be doing the wrong thing?

Scroogerton decided he needed to put his foot down about what he called, All this holiday day off-ing! He demanded his administrative assistant to come to his office.

Benigno, tomorrow we have a lot of work to do! he snapped. Is that clear?

But, Mr. Scroogerton, tomorrow is Christmas, Benigno rushed. He and the other employees had already had to work that day—Christmas Eve. A full day, Scroogerton had demanded. Not a half day.

    And? Scroogerton burst sarcastically.

I thought you were giving us that day off? Benigno questioned, upset.

Harrumph! A wasted day in my opinion! But at least I can salvage some of it by you and me putting in a hard day’s work!

    Shouldn’t we…you know—celebrate the birth of Christ?

We can celebrate it by showing Jesus our work ethic.

    What?

Jesus was a very hard worker, wasn’t he?

    Yes, but—

    We must follow his example.

    But—

    Are you blaspheming Jesus? Scroogerton
