    The Train Ride

My name is Daniel McLaughlin, are you Mr. Frank Middleton?

State your business, I need to catch a train, can’t be late, won’t be another train for two more days.

Mr. Middleton, I am a writer for the dime novel, Saturday’s Reader, we are the dime novel that has published stories like Custer’s Died Bravely, Wyatt Earp a Vendetta after the OK Corral, and Buffalo Bill a Real American Hero and there’s more.

"Keep going with titles young man and you will run out of time.

I know who you are, not you, but your paper, which I have read on occasion.

Seth and I got the biggest kick about some of the stories you told about him and the City of Deadwood, and a fitting story you did about Wild Bill, God rest his soul.

Broke Calamity’s heart it did, she just kept reading that dime novel till it fell apart; I bought her three copies so she would have enough till she passed in 1901, God rest her and Wild Bill’s souls.

Walk with me son; I have to catch that train."

Sir, may I ride along with you.

"Sure, but I can’t spare the expense of purchasing your ticket, I am only reimbursed by Pinkerton for my ticket.

I like the window seat, want to see what the hell the world is up to."

Mr. Middleton, the way I hear it is you ran away from home when you were only thirteen, is that correct?

What is the title going to be?

    Not sure Mr. Middleton.

Okay, so you want to know the facts about my life?

    Yes sir.

"At least you are a polite young man. That bastard, Jack McCall, who shot Wild Bill in the back wasn’t. He didn’t even give Wild Bill the courtesy of a fair fight, but I guess Jack knew it would not have ended well for him.

Calamity and Wild Bill; I read and heard all the rumors that would fill all of the graves in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Deadwood. I know the truth; yes, they were married, yes, they had two daughters and yes, Wild Bill was married to more than one woman at the same time.

So you ask the questions and I will answer with the truth."

    Mr. Middleton,………..

Daniel, you can call me Frank and I’ll return the favor and call you Daniel, deal?

A western deal is complete and with spit in their hands they shake.

Mr…… I mean Frank, you ran away from home at the age of only thirteen, right?

    Outlaw At Thirteen

"Yup, I was thirteen, thought I knew it all, so one night I gathered my meager belongings, and told my younger sister, Mary, I was leaving. She said she wanted to go with me, but decided not to, she never did leave the City of Philadelphia.

At the time, I had three other siblings. I was the oldest, then there was Mary, followed by James and last was Susan. After I left home, two more boys joined our family; Daniel, and last was William."

So you came from the big city, I thought….

"You would have thought I was born on the frontier, fought Indians and killed bears with only a knife, like it was written about Crocket.

If you check the facts about the most famous people of what this generation calls the
