- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is about effective teaching principles for music educators. The emphasis is on keeping the big-picture as the priority and not getting off track with lesser duties such as "tightening screws on music stands", and too much pushing of competition and technique which could begin burn-out in the students. The second word in the title, artistry, is there for a reason. This author feels that one of his most important goals is to invoke musical creativity and the ability to incorporate the young musician's emotion into his playing. He feels that nurturing appreciation for music goes a long way in accelerating the students music skills and diversity of musical knowledge. He delves into general techniques such as teaching primarily groups versus teaching individual students as well as things such as what the various roles should be for a conductor. He advocates making a deliberate effort at the start of any school season to learn about the personal lives of each student to better encourage them during the year and also be listen all the time for suggestions or hints from those students on how to improve his own teaching. There are many insights into teaching. Much of the book addresses basic issues and priorities that apply to teaching any group of students in any field, math, music, art, literature, or leadership.
