Partners in Crime - AJ Tipton

Partners in Crime: A Girl on Girl Jailbreak Romance

H appy Birthday, Lulu whispered to her reflection as tears streamed down her face. She grasped the edge of the gold-framed mirror with shaking hands, trying to straighten it on the wall, and only succeeding in leaving it more crooked. She tried to force a smile; a girl’s eighteenth birthday should be a happy day. A cheerful voice brought Lulu back from her thoughts, and she quickly wiped all traces of tears from her face .

My dear, you look spectacular! Poppa smiled at Lulu broadly as he strode into the dining room, but his hands were shaking. Eighteen - such a grown up girl. Where has the time gone? He handed her a small grey box with a shiny blue ribbon tied around it. For you, my pet.

Lulu concentrated on making sure her face looked as excited and happy as her father wanted. He always made such a fuss on her birthday, celebrating with lavish gifts and spectacular outings. She'd given up long ago trying to make him understand how each birthday was as much a reminder of the mother who died giving birth to her as it was a celebration of the past year. She gave her father a peck on the cheek, unfastening the ribbon and looping it around her long blonde hair. She opened the box to reveal a heart-shaped silver locket attached to a delicate silver chain. Lulu's heart flipped in her chest. She knew this necklace.

It belonged to your mother, Poppa’s voice was soft and sad. She often spoke of giving this to you on your eighteenth birthday.

It’s wonderful Poppa, thank you! Lulu grinned, securing the chain around her neck.

She twirled in a circle, letting the pale blue skirts of her new dress flare out, showing it off to the faces on the portraits lining the walls. Generations of her family were pictured here, the portraits so numerous they spilled out from the dining room into the foyer, winding ever further into the manor with each generation. Lulu had spent hours as a child gazing into the faces of her ancestors. She would amuse herself with imagined stories of their lives and laugh at the strong family resemblances--especially around the noses and chins. They all smiled down from their golden frames, resplendent in their furs, silks, and jewels. If only they had been as lucky as they were rich. War and plague had wiped them all out, and she and Poppa were all that was left of their line, but she liked to think they were looking out for them. She clasped the locket against her heart. What a lovely-

The doors to the manor burst open, sending splinters flying across the foyer.

Malcolm Rafferty, you are under arrest! Policemen swarmed through the door, blue and silver uniforms clashing with the deep reds and golds of the manor.

Get off him! Lulu could hear the fear in her own scream as she tried to run to her father’s side. Officers pushed him to the ground and shackled his wrists behind his back. Strong arms lifted her, preventing her from interfering.

No! She squirmed and kicked, trying to get free, trying to run to the only family she had.

Lulu! her father cried, still straining to reach her with his shackled hands. Two officers grabbed his arms and pulled him back. His feet dragged on the lush carpet as they pulled him out the door. Be strong!

Lulu fought to follow him. The arms wrapped around her back held her still, the man twisting away as she tried to kick and claw at him. She wriggled and squirmed as the man grunted with the effort of trying to restrain her. She glanced around at the portraits of her ancestors, willing them to help her. But the portraits just looked down, their expressions passive and dead.

Poppa! Through the window, Lulu could see the men pushing him into a black carriage with bars on the windows. She stopped struggling and relaxed into a dead weight, falling out of the guard’s grasp.

Watch it! he cried, but she was already gone, sprinting and dodging around officers too slow to reach out and grab her. Her dress snagged against a sconce on the wall and she heard a tear, but she didn't care. The carriage was pulling away and taking her world with it.

Poppa! She thought she could see his silhouette through the bars of the back window, but they'd gotten too much of a head start. Poppa, she sobbed, falling to her knees on the rough stones.

An older man wearing an impressive uniform adorned with medals and decorative patches approached Lulu, a stern look on his face. His expression made her want to tear off the medals on his jacket and stuff them into his mouth.

Where are you taking him? Lulu screamed. He hasn't done anything wrong!

Miss, your father here owes an almost impressive amount of money. He’s going to be held at the Daniels Prison until such time as his debt has been paid. He gestured a white glove around the house. "This house and everything in it will be auctioned toward that end. You are to evacuate the premises immediately. Do you understand me?"

Leave? But this is my home.

Not anymore. But we’re not heartless. You can run upstairs and pack a bag. The older officer lifted a bushy grey eyebrow. One. These officers will make sure you leave by sunset. He tipped his cap, sauntering out the door.

She tried to understand what had just happened, how everything had gone so terribly wrong, but the facts slipped through her mind like wet soap. Pack a bag? What could she possibly put in a bag? They had her father. They were taking her life. Where would she stay? She had no friends, no relatives to rely on. How would she live? She let out a long breath, trying not to panic.

Okay, she said to nobody in particular. I’m going to pack a bag.

Having a task helped ease her rising panic.

One thing at a time. Lulu pulled a pale pink trunk patterned with winding violets out of one of the guest rooms. It was almost as big as she was and she dragged it with difficulty through the deep carpeting of the halls, gathering items as she went.

The heavy trunk rattled as it bumpily slid down each step towards the foyer. Lulu was satisfied with the impressive amount of items she had crammed inside: most of the fine china and almost all of her combs, bows, and parasols. When it was clear she wasn't going to be any further trouble, the officers had let her alone to start dismantling the rest of the house for auction. She thought she saw a few of them putting a few of the smaller silver pieces directly into their pockets.

Poppa, how could you have let this happen?

Lulu wanted nothing more than to collapse on the floor and weep, but she focused on the weight of the trunk dragging behind her. The objects inside rattled against each other as she dragged it the last few feet out the door. She could hear men arguing down the hallway toward the kitchen; the sound of crashing upstairs.

The walk from the manor to town had never felt so long in her life. Maybe bringing the china was a bad idea, she thought after the second blister on her palm burst from holding the trunk strap too tightly.

She tried to ignore the lump lodged in her throat as she dragged the trunk down the main street toward the shops and bars. The sound of laughter and chatter began to give her hope. Surely somebody will hire me! Getting a job must be easy, so many people have them.

Lulu caught her reflection in a shop window and grimaced, dropping her trunk with a relieved sigh and walking over for a better look. She was an absolute mess. She ran her fingers through her long, blond hair, trying to smooth out the tangles from the struggle with the officers and the long
