Liam

The car careened to a stop. Liam barely managed to open the door before retching at the side of the road. A mixture of spit, vomit and blood dripped from his lower lip. He wiped it away with the back of his hand before jerking the car door closed and slamming his foot on the accelerator. The old station wagon lurched forward.

His hands were shaking. He stretched them, one at a time, hoping they would steady. The ring finger on his right hand was broken. It was swollen three times its normal size and stayed immobile when the rest of the fingers flexed around the steering wheel. The remaining knuckles were badly scraped and bleeding.

He took quick stock of other injuries. Some of his ribs were broken, judging by how difficult it was to breathe. His nose was shattered and the small orbital bones of his left eye were tender. Concussion was likely, since his vision was blurred and he felt sleepy. He needed a place to hunker down and heal. He needed a sanctuary.

She had given her life for him, his mother, and for the first time in twenty years he was truly alone.

He checked the rearview mirror. No headlights. No one was following.

Not yet.

But he knew once those men got a taste for blood, they wouldn't stop.

They would come.

And he'd be ready.

He clenched the wheel as the car skid onto a two-lane highway, raining debris and rock as it jumped off the small caliche road.

Six months later...

Lucy

The hallway was a circle. Things appeared bigger in the middle and smaller towards the edges, because of the curve of the glass. Fido and Rex rubbed against her calves, their soft tails swishing around her shins. She pushed them away gently with her heel, causing Rex to rear back and slash at her ankle.

Bitch, she mumbled at the orange tabby female. The cat sat down and proceeded to lick her own ass in response.

Fido, having stepped away momentarily to let the women hash out their differences, began his loving ministrations once again. When she looked down to the black and white male, he let out a howling meow. I know you're hungry, boy. Just let me...

Her gaze returned to the peephole of the apartment door when she heard the echo of footsteps. Right on time, she whispered. 6:43 pm on the dot.

The first time she met Liam, the postman had mistakenly put her copy of Fancy Cat magazine in his mail slot. I got your mail, Lucy, he'd said after knocking on the door.
