About this ebook

Juvenile delinquency, a metaphysical perspective sheds light on a global situation we are facing today. Offering solutions that are sustainable, the Author has nicely presented a blend of facts, experience and transcendental wisdom delivered in the most loving way for the people of today.
It begins with a list of action points meant to serve as a compass in navigating the reader not just through the book but through the gradual ascension from the physical perspective of a global problem to a more subtle or metaphysical approach.
The book is in three parts or waves. Part I: Insights and Sensitization sets the pace by giving the readers a general overview of the technical aspects of the issue at hand while simultaneously identifying setbacks in the current situation of things. Part II: Raising Consciousness discusses specific qualities and skill set which could help in creating an environment which is less prone to delinquency. Finally, Part III: Maintaining Culture gives us proactive ways by which we can sustain higher consciousness while trying our best to help our juveniles lead a balanced life.
At the conclusion of each wave there is a list of “Reflections” with important points from the text which we are meant to deliberate on and apply in our lives. This book can serve as a companion for parents, juveniles, lecturers, students offering courses in Guidance and Counseling, teachers and all those who have a responsibility to help form our juveniles today into responsible and strong individuals.
The instructions in this book are passed across with a heart of love as an offering to our juveniles today. The Author understands the difficulties you might be going through during this trying period of your life and it is his desire to help you surmount them. He knows times can be tough, but as a popular Author once said; “tough times don’t last but tough people do”.
In general, Juvenile Delinquency, a Metaphysical perspective, tries to show that juveniles are individuals beyond this gross material body, and that by accessing this higher consciousness which is readily available to those who endeavor, they can become great leaders of today and tomorrow.

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to my spiritual mentor His Holiness B.T. Swami who wanted and encouraged me to complete this book, even when it was just a few writings I had put together as a juvenile, years before his physical departure from this planet. I must say life has given me a realized perspective of whatever I share here today.

I’ll also like to dedicate this book to every juvenile struggling with any form of delinquency, in the world at large and especially in my immediate spiritual community. I pray this book becomes a beacon of hope during your dark nights. Additionally, I’ll like to dedicate this book to every parent who is trying in one way or the other to raise conscious, equipoised juveniles.

Finally, to every kid, Vaishnava¹ or not who had to grow up in a separated family, or currently in one, who was raised by strangers, who survived torments that were a constant mental companion, but who had hope and believed that there was still a lot of wonderful things to learn in life.

    FOREWORD

What an excellent addition to the forays of literatures on corrective measures to the ills plaguing the society today. It's my great pleasure to welcome the readers to Timi's Metaphysical Perspective to Juvenile delinquency. It's quite important to note the author's perspective to this age old problem. Besides the usual known causes to youthful misdemeanor, the author has chosen to take another look as to why the adolescent age can be a daunting challenge, to the youngsters, to parents and the society at large from a meta-physical perspective.

Exploring the unseen cause, through psychology, spirituality and the science of the self, Timi Adeyemo profers a number of measures to the seeming intractable problems confronting the youths amidst the endless temptations from the environment, and the peer pressure to assert oneself in a condescending manner.

Timi's exceptional background, being born into a devotional environment by parents who are adepts of the Vaishnava spiritual tradition, allows him to develop the mind to see the world in a different light and more so permits him to want to impact upon his generation the experience of imbibing a spiritual culture. Particularly interesting is the fact that what the readers are going to discover in the Metaphysical perspective to Juvenile delinquency are not some precepts from an authority figure trying to instruct but the tools from a contemporary youth, saying I have equally gone through life sordid experience and I could have ended up a delinquent but I chose differently for the following reasons, as he puts it in these words:

As a piece of advice to juveniles the world over, I want you to understand that no matter what you are going through now there is someone somewhere going through worse. Not only that, it is also good to know that there are people in the world who will do anything to be in your shoes right now considering how difficult their life is. The most amazing part is there is someone, somewhere who is making a very significant impact in the life of others with way less resources than you have.

Metaphysical Perspective to Juvenile Delinquency should be a handbook for those who are in search of some of the best approach for handling the painful situation of a child hurting himself as a reaction to the ruthless reality of the material world. Wishing you all a good read.

    ADVANCE ACCLAIM

Juvenile delinquency from a metaphysical perspective is a narrative presented by an Author who shares his personal experiences as well as those of others who have either been delinquent themselves or have been close associates of people who have undergone various trials and tribulations of life as delinquents themselves.

There appears to be quite a large body of literature on the issue of juvenile delinquency. However the solutions that are proffered are mainly emerging from a physical or exoteric perspective. As a man who was raised by parents who both belonged to the Hare Krishna movement, the author argues that this issue of juvenile delinquency is a problem that could not be addressed adequately from a physical viewpoint. This book therefore presents a humble attempt to address delinquency from a metaphysical perspective.

I recommend this book first, for individuals who have suffered the consequences of being delinquent themselves and who have been shopping for ways to minimize the effects that their past has had on them. Second, this book will serve as a useful resource for persons, both young and old who for one reason or another have friend’s relatives or clients who are victims of child delinquency. Thirdly, this book serves as a useful resource for those whose actions and inactions may generate a situation that might perpetrate this act. Additionally, this book would serve as a useful resource for professionals and counselors. The writer concludes this philosophical narrative with the realization that whatever situation that occurs does so with a reason and such situations could be turned around for the better, provided one does not give up.

The book makes an interesting read and I encourage the reader to thumb through each pages of the book meticulously in order to realize the real import.

Yamunajivan (Timi Adeyemo) is a young man on a mission. His book is chock full of thoughts, experiences and practical, albeit non-traditional, ideas for saving our youth. This step-by-step, in-depth guide for parents, teachers, juveniles and others, addresses contemporary issues facing juveniles today. Timi's book answers the questions: what are some fundamental societal strategies that support juvenile well-being; what are the categories of juvenile delinquency and what are some realistic and outstanding solutions to this crisis? Basing his recommendations on an excellent blend of modern research, ancient scriptures and techniques, and personal experience, this young man has a plan that provides hope and insight for today.

    PREFACE

If we think back on our own process of growing up, each one of us will remember some struggles during puberty and adolescence. Such a time of reckoning. Trying to ascertain who we are separate from our parents. Which of their standards and ideals will become ours. Which ones are we clear we want to reject. Who am I, if I am not just what my parents say I am? Who am I for my own self? Who can I be that inspires me? Who can I be that doesn't have to please everyone? Who can I be that doesn't cause harm to others? Who am I that I can determine how to meet my own needs without manipulating others? Who am I for this world? What difference do I want to make? What is my purpose for being here on this planet at this time? Do I have a higher purpose? What is the purpose of this earth planet? Why is there so much disharmony and strife in the world? Why are people suffering so much? Why am I suffering? Who can I be for myself and the world that would have deeper meaning and purpose? Who is the 'I' that is asking these questions. These are a few of the questions that might run through our heads from time to time.

All generations contend with these deeper questions. My parents may have had it simpler. They were raised during the Great Depression – so there was less. This had its own difficulties, and at the same time made life a little simpler. As I grew up, there was the war in Vietnam and racial equality and sex, drugs and rock n roll to stimulate and excite our senses.

I am now a grandmother, and my grandsons are being raised at a time of information explosion, where almost every question you have can be answered instantaneously online. Things are moving faster, cars, technology, and people. Children in this generation are being bombarded by so much more. It can be daunting and overwhelming. How does an adolescent in this age find themselves?

This book offers a solid support system for everyone in all ages. It is important to know who we are and why we are here. Without meaning and purpose, this world is excruciatingly painful and depressing simultaneously.

As you open the pages of this book, may deeper and deeper levels of realizations flood into your psyche, so that you too can find your meaning and purpose and a way in which you can support your children and grandchildren to find theirs.

We can spend our life running around on autopilot, trying to keep up with the Jones, or we can take the time to pause and to reflect deeply. Either way, we will be affecting our lives, our children's lives, and the lives of others. The choice is ours. The choice is yours.

    INTRODUCTION

At the age of fifteen, a high school friend of mine shared with me the difficulties she was experiencing in tolerating the physical presence of her uncle who had raped her when she was merely 9 years old. I was devastated. The thought of an older man forcibly having intercourse with a young girl made me cringe and curl in disgust. My friend went on to tell me that she really had no clear idea what sex was at that time, but intuitively felt that what he was doing was wrong. Still she was so afraid to speak and didn’t know what to say or do, especially since he warned her not to disclose the incidence to anyone. Now years later, even though her uncle was no longer physically present in her immediate surroundings, the thoughts of what he did kept haunting her like a nightmare. She was overwhelmed with fear, shame, hurt and sorrow.

Here I was only fifteen years of age myself trying to give solace and advice to this young lady. I felt totally unequipped and somewhat helpless to wipe away her anxieties and pain. This incident impacted my life greatly and called me to take a stand. My friend did not have a voice, just like many other girls around the world. I didn’t have much of a voice back then either, but I was inspired to help.

So thus, at the age of sixteen, I searched for the loudest microphone I could find and discovered the greatest sword of all time, my pen. I started writing this book as a mouthpiece. I wanted to become not only her voice, but the voice of so many juveniles silenced by fear, guilt, insecurity and trauma.

At such a young age, my task seemed rather herculean. Although I felt a great deal of urgency, I also wanted to present something comprehensive yet readily accessible and easily understood. I wanted to include as many aspects of juvenile trauma as possible to provide some kind of fighting chance for resolution of this vast and daunting topic. And so I visited every library within my reach, studied books on the subject from various authors, all the while trying to get a feel of what made juveniles tick. However, every single book I went through approached the topic of juvenile delinquency from a physical perspective. Even those with a psychological view still pointed out physical factors as the main reasons and proposed a physical recourse as a solution. I knew there had to be more. As I was a juvenile myself. I was soon to discover the truth in a way no one else could have ever shown me.

At this time I was in my last class of senior high school and soon to proceed to the University. I had heard a lot about the lifestyle on campus. I had basic knowledge of dos and don'ts but I guess it all had to be put to the test. Only then could my writing of this book be worth its weight in gold. Although I initially wanted to complete this book before heading to the University; God and nature had different plans.

I showed this manuscript to my spiritual mentor, His Holiness Bhakti Tirtha Swami (John E. Favors), a Princeton graduate, author, and scholar of international relations and conflict resolution before he passed away in 2005. As he glanced through he said Hmm. Keep writing. We can post whatever you write on my forum and with time when we have good material then we can compile it into a book. A young lad at the time, my only happiness was that at least he liked it. That was enough for me.

Today as I pen down this introduction, I am now a young parent myself, seeking to give my daughter some of the tools that worked for me and to prepare her for an ever changing world. I can humbly yet convincingly say that whatever you read in this book is not merely a set of ideologies but a collection of practical guidelines, which definitely helped me and offer hope for all juveniles in the pursuit for excellence.

As you peruse each page you are sure to notice that I connect theory to events that happened in my own life. That connection I have seen, felt and gained over the years by using myself as a case study, while analyzing my findings with juveniles the world over, by juxtaposing the results from the microcosm of what happened to me and my peers to the larger global macrocosm. This book is in no way trying to shove religion or spirituality down the throats of youngsters; rather, it is an offering to conscious self-awareness. As we become self-aware, we naturally become more loving and selfless.

I have been blessed with a rare privilege to travel practically three quarters of the globe before hitting my third decade. This experience has further enriched my interaction with juveniles and has given me more insights as to how juveniles think, feel and act, and most importantly the real challenges they face deep down inside. For close to two decades I have kept this manuscript with me wherever I went penning down realizations, information, findings and facts as I traveled the world over.

I sincerely pray and desire that this work acts as a beacon of hope in dark times of distress, that it helps every juvenile and every reader in tackling the global issues we all are facing.

May this work give pleasure to my spiritual mentor (who was like a father to me) as well as to every predecessor mentor.

Juvenile Delinquency, a Metaphysical Perspective begins with a list of action points meant to serve as a compass in navigating the reader not just through this book but through the gradual ascension from the physical perspective of a global problem to a more subtle or metaphysical approach.

The book is in three parts or waves. Part I: Insights and Sensitization sets the pace by giving a general overview of the technical aspects of juvenile delinquency while simultaneously identifying current setbacks. Part II: Raising Consciousness discusses specific qualities and skill sets which could help in creating an environment less prone to delinquency. Finally, Part III: Maintaining Culture gives us proactive ways by which we can sustain higher consciousness while assisting juveniles to lead a balanced life.

At the conclusion of each wave there is a list of Reflections on which we can deliberate and apply in our lives. This book can serve as a companion for parents, juveniles, teachers, guidance counselors, lecturers, as well as all those who have the duty of forming juveniles into responsible individuals.

The instructions in this book are shared from a heart of love as an offering to juveniles today. I understand the difficulties of this trying period of life and it is my desire to present a support system. I know times can be rough but as a popular Author (Zig Ziglar) once said; tough times don’t last but tough people do. ²

In general, Juvenile Delinquency, a Metaphysical Perspective, demonstrates that juveniles are individuals beyond this gross material body, just like anyone else and that by accessing higher consciousness (which is readily available to those who endeavor) the path to becoming a great leader is wide open.

Ten metaphysical action points for helping delinquent juveniles

These action points listed below are presented in a very simple format, so that everyone can benefit from them. As simplistic as they might look, these will help the reader to deeply connect with the guidelines herein while giving the understanding of the esoteric nature of this book. The reader can refer to them after every section or chapter to help them internalize the concepts in this book.

    1. FIRST THINGS FIRST³

As we go through our daily activities and dealings it is easy to get overwhelmed by endless things which we have to do. These things seem to define our lives and if care is not taken we begin to sink into the quicksand of never ending ‘to-do’ lists without knowing our real purpose in life. Putting first things first is bringing into perspective the things that are of primary importance.

    2. WE ARE NOT THIS BODY

This body which we possess is made up of matter; it is temporary and bound to expire at some point.⁴ We are eternal spirit souls dwelling in this body and our primary responsibility in this body is to end the circle of repeated birth and death by knowledge and detachment.⁵

    3. USE THINGS NOT PEOPLE

    The idea that we have
