About this ebook

Charlie's life quickly became complicated, more complicated that it had ever been. Befriended by Emil's niece and nephew after her rescue and escape from Howard's minions, Charlie was unprepared for the concern and worry, or the crushing, overwhelming guilt when she learned that Emli's sister, Cathy was suddenly kidnapped; taken instead of herself because Cathy was the other Emli look-a-like...

---

After returning home to Detroit and sending her children off to soccer camp, Emli's sister Cathy felt a rising fear of impending, personal danger. Knowing how her father would react if he found out, she forced herself to rise to Emli's last challenge and collected the evidence against him that Emli had hidden so many years past; eviidence of his brutality and corrupt business activities, evidence of his moral and physical crimes, and the evidence of his violation of his two, high school aged daughters.

Taking Charlie'off-handed offer of help as truly meant, Cathy sent her cache of evidence to Charlie for safe keeping. And with her rising fears and her husband away on a business trip, Cathy begged Charlie to watch her children. Reluctantly, still feeling that Cathy's fears were likely unfounded, Charlie agreed and brought the chldren to the ranch. But when Cathy was suddenly kidnapped days later, Charlie was crushed, overcome with a deep sense of guilt and contrition; blaming herself for not giving Cathy better protection.

Feeling Charlie's deep concerns and knowing who was behind the abduction, Glen turned his resources to the search for Cathy and with the children's astute observations, located the most likely hiding place. But its location told him it was only temporary while plans to move her out of the country were exicuted.

Sharing Charlie's sense of forboding and his own worries for Cathy's plight, Glen formed a strike team and planned their mission. No matter the outcome, Glen and Charlie were going to attempt Cathy's rescue and stop Howard, once and for all. Glen fervently hoped they had enough time...

Monte had to wait until they were down off the mountain and had picked a suitable restaurant for lunch. Once seated, he turned to the children. Grandpa said he hopes you’re enjoying your vacation.

    Melony and Michael smiled.

Was that your call up on the mountain? Melony asked.

Yes. And—he glanced at Cat—it seems Grandma has talked him into taking her on a vacation also.

They’re going on vacation? Cat voiced her surprise before she thought. I mean, it’s been a very long time since they’ve gone anywhere together.

That’s true, Monte reiterated. Mary asks for you to look in on the house a few times while they’re away.

S...sure, Cat concurred, and Emli’s sketch of the trunk flashed through her mind. I can do that. When are they leaving?

Tomorrow afternoon. Monte waited for Cat’s reply.

Her thoughts stumbled, but she held her composure and slowly asked, That’s soon. When did they decide?

He said your mom’s been working on the idea for a few days. He blames her thinking about our vacation for her deciding they need one also.

Where are they going, Dad? Melony asked.

He said New England, and then down to North Carolina and home from there.

They should get back about the same time you two get back from soccer camp. Now go and wash up before the waiter comes to see what you want to eat.

Okay, they said together, and slid out of their chairs.

Why New England? Cat asked when the children had disappeared down the appropriate hallway.

Monte’s expression turned somber. Do you remember me telling you about the list of names your dad had? He watched her a moment. The investors that had single daughters?

Cat’s face suddenly went pale. Oh Monte, nooo.

He nodded. It’s only a hunch on my part, but two of those on the list are in the New England area. One in New Hampshire and one in Maine. I’ll check my notes when we get home, but I think New Hampshire has two, unmarried older daughters. There’s another one in North Carolina and a resort project just inland from the Pamlico Sound on the waterway inland to Greenville.

I don’t think Mother planned this vacation at all, Cat suddenly admitted, feeling like her chair was beginning to sink in sandy ground. Monte reached out and took her hand and she immediately wanted him to hold it, tight.

Yeah, but I have a feeling she’s going along with whatever he’s up to. My first reaction to the call, Monte said, glancing at the hallway to the restrooms, was that Tony called him and for some reason he felt he needed to leave the Detroit area. Then, when he told me where he’s going, I could only think of the one reason he would choose New England. Then I remembered what was in North Carolina. When he saw the children coming back, he held Cat’s eyes. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you before now. We’ll talk more later.

Thanks, Monte. There’s definitely something not right here. He’s getting ready to do something. Cat forced herself to smile and greet the children with comments about the menu as they sat down.

Mr. Norman Kent, please, the man’s voice requested when Norman answered his mobile phone.

This is Norman. How may I help you? He quickly went to the kitchen counter and grabbed a pen and pad of paper.

Norman. I’m Will Little out at Central Colorado Aviation, located on Meadow Lake Airport. We spoke about a month ago.

Yes, Will. I remember. My fiancée Celia and I were out to talk about getting recurrent and learning a little about mountain flying.

Yes, that was when, Will remembered. Well, a matter has come up and I need to speak with you again. I was wondering if you’d be willing to come out to talk with me, possibly as early as tomorrow.

He thought about their schedule. Yes, I suppose I could do that. Would nine o’clock be all right?

Yes, that would be good. And bring your pretty fiancée. I’m sure she’ll be interested in hearing about this.

Sure. Norman was puzzled by his specific inclusion. We’ll see you at nine in the morning.

    Thank you. And Will disconnected.

Celia stepped inside from the front veranda and asked who was on the phone. He explained that they had an appointment in the morning and she was specifically included in the invitation.

    Z:\Y - Notes and Background Data\eBook Break Images\EW Books\eBook Scene Break P-51 Image - Isolated.png

NORMAN WAS PLEASED as he turned onto Judge Orr Road at the lights and glanced at his watch. He and Celia would be on time.

He drove to Cessna Drive and turned south onto Meadow Lake Airport and then back west, stopping at the log bumper beside Central Colorado Aviation’s hangar. Norman helped Celia out of his jeep and led her to the people door in the side of the building. Inside, he looked around and they found Will on a stepstool, peering down behind the uncowled engine on a 172.

Good morning, Norman greeted, stopping beside Will and the naked engine installation.

Aah, Norman. Will straightened. And your lovely fiancée, Celia, if I remember right. Good morning.

Thank you, Celia greeted. You do remember right.

Thanks for coming out, He wiped his hands and stepped down off the stepstool. Especially with so little explanation on my part.

We are certainly curious, Norman admitted.

Can I get you any water, coffee? Will asked, and started walking toward the small office in the corner.

Norman turned to look at Celia and she nodded.

Thanks. Coffee for both of us, he said, and guided her behind Will.

Will poured two mugs and set them on his desk as Norman seated Celia in one of the chairs before it. They thanked him as he poured himself one and Norman sat down when Will did.

I have been asked to bestow a gift on you both, Will explained, and stirred a packet of sugar into his.

A gift? I don’t understand. Norman glanced at Celia, then back at Will with a dubious expression.

Yes. Will smiled and picked up a clipboard from the side of his desk. This is a contract I was asked to write up and have you sign if you are in agreement. There will be no costs or expenses incurred by you. Even the renter’s insurance is covered.

Renter’s insurance? Norman was still confused.

I’m sorry, Norman. Will looked at him as he turned the clipboard for him to see. The gifts for you two are this. First, for you, the costs of getting you recurrent and indoctrinated for mountain flying and for you to obtain your Instrument Rating are fully paid for, including the wet rental costs for a suitable training airplane. I’ll choose the appropriate planes for the various phases of your training.

Norman knew his mouth had dropped open and finally he asked, Why is someone doing this?

Glen didn’t say, but I do need your signature and contact information to accept the terms and to initiate the renter’s insurance. Will pushed the clipboard closer to Norman to get him to take it and read.

After perusing the contract and seeing the terms were as Will had described, Norman looked up, hesitant.

Norman. Will smiled. If you don’t sign it, I can’t teach you and get paid for doing it. Unless of course you would rather pay for the training yourself.

I don’t know what to say. Norman looked at the contract again.

Say ‘thank you’ and sign it. Will was still smiling.

If it looks okay, Celia encouraged, go ahead.

Norman took a deep breath and signed the contract.

Good, good. Will took the papers and separated the sheets, giving Norman a set of copies. Now, for you, Celia. Oh, by the way, when is the happy day?

Me? Oh, the fourth of August, she said. A week after I take my bar exams.

Very nice. Will picked up another clipboard. It’s so nice to have young folks like yourselves moving into our area. I certainly hope you come to like it here.

We already do, she said with a wide smile. Norman’s been in love with Colorado most of his life, and I’m learning everything I can about it.

Well, welcome. Will set the clipboard in front of her. Since it’s never a good idea to simply be a passenger in light airplanes without knowing what’s going on, or in the event of an emergency, this contract is for your flight training from the beginning, through your private pilot’s ticket and your Instrument Rating.

    Me? Why...? Celia asked, startled.

I just told you. Will smiled. We can set up your training on your own schedule so you don’t have to wait on when Norman’s available. I will also need your signature and contact information for the renter’s insurance, since you two are not married yet.

Norman grinned and looked at Celia, cocking his head slightly.

Celia smiled at him and reviewed the contract. Finally, she finished and looked at Norman.

Should I really do this? she asked softly. I’m not as crazy about flying as you are...

But you’ll be going with me when I do fly, he noted in return. Or I’ll be going with you when you do. One more new thing for us to do together in our new life.

Celia smiled and signed the contract.

Will separated the sheets and handed Celia her copies.

Will? Norman asked. You said Glen set this up. Is he the same Glen I’ve met?

Will nodded. All he would say was that this was the least he could do.

Norman took another deep breath and let it out slowly. We haven’t done anything to deserve this.

Maybe not, but he must think you have. We can start anytime that suits you, individually or together. Maybe in the next week or so? Give me a call.

I’ll have to wait until the end of the month, Celia explained. I can’t take any more time away from studying before my exams. After that, I can plan on some time—

That is very understandable, Celia. Look at your schedule and call me. I suggest that in planning your time, try to schedule a time weekly. More than two weeks between sessions may mean some things will need to be repeated. It isn’t desirable to take too long in between, but if that’s the way it has to be, then we’ll work with it. Let me know when you want to start and I’ll set you up with your instructor.

Thanks, Will. Norman extended his hand.

Thanks for me also. Celia shook his hand.

That’s all I have for today. You’re certainly welcome to walk around and look at the planes, ask questions, or whatever you’d like to do.

Will stood up and gestured to the door and followed them into the hangar.

Thanks again, Will, but I think Celia and I will head back into town and think about all of this. I’ll get back with you and one of us will let you know about Celia’s schedule as we get closer to or after her exams.

They waved goodbye and walked back to his jeep.

THEY HAVE TO BE DOING this because you stopped that van at the fly-in, Celia surmised as they drove back down Highway 24. I can’t think of anything else.

But all I did was stop it, Cee. Nothing significant. The police and the EMTs did everything important.

Don’t be so modest, En. I was scared out of my wits when you jumped in front of that van, but if you hadn’t, Charlie and Dani would have been taken away, and who knows where they would’ve been taken or what might’ve happened to them then. You were a bit of a hero.

No, Cee. I’m not a hero. I just happened to be close enough at the right time to help a little.

Celia chuckled. Okay, En. Whatever you say. You’re still a hero in my book.

AS LUNCH IN THE MAIN house dining room finished, Woody asked Ratchet if there was anything pressing on their schedule for the afternoon.

"Just the Affair’s first flight, Ratchet noted, but Bump, Lenny, Dani, and I have the prep and flight readiness covered. West will fly escort in Hell Raiser and Charlie will get to do the honors, again."

She’s becoming quite a hand—Bump smiled and nodded to Charlie—at first flights.

It’s been a while, Bump. Last one was mid-April, Charlie argued.

Do you have something? Ratchet asked, and looked back at Woody.

Yes, I do. Woody smiled and glanced at Eddie. Seems like someone is trying to beat her sister’s hours to get a ticket.

Eddie looked at Woody and made a face indicating she had not wanted him pointing that out.

But don’t worry, Woody continued with a wide smile, I won’t let her push the schedule too much. That said, I’d like to fly her first dual cross-country this afternoon. Down south, Boise City and Clayton, for unfamiliar airport work and to put some of that ground school navigation knowledge into practice.

Ratchet smiled and raised his tea glass in toast. Very well. To a good afternoon of flying. It’ll be a little turbulent, but what’s a little wind to a real pilot?

Everyone raised their glasses to Eddie in salute.

Keep in mind, Eddie, West said firmly but with a soft smile, it’s how well you learn and remember. Not how fast you get Woody to go through it. Take the time to learn everything perfectly. So you won’t have to think later when you have to remember it in a hurry.

Yes, West. Eddie nodded. I’ll do my best.

DANI. WEST STOOD UP from the desk where Charlie and Ratchet were reviewing the maintenance record details, one line at a time. Grab some rags and a couple of screwdrivers and let’s do a walk-around to be sure Charlie’s ‘other man’ is ready to go.

Sure. She quickly went to the bin for clean rags. She stopped at her toolbox and grabbed a straight-bladed and a Phillips screwdriver. Then Dani followed West up the ramp to the two waiting airplanes.

It always surprises me how long it takes to review the maintenance items, Dani admitted absently as she climbed up on the wing and opened the oil tank access door.

I know, West concurred. There are a few hundred items to be checked off, and you know as well as I do, it’s best to find the one you missed down here and not up there.

Yup. Dani smiled. Sort of like a loose fuel line connection. She wiped the dipstick, reinserted it in the tank receptacle, pulled it out again, and read the level. Down about two quarts, she said, and replaced the dipstick.

Dani hurried down off the wing and collected two quarts of oil and a pouring spout from the tug. When she finished topping off the oil and securing the cap, she got the ladder and checked the coolant in the header tank.

West continued slowly around the plane, starting along the left wing trailing edge, controls and hinges, actuating rods, tips, and navigation light cover security. He checked the tape over the left gunports and then inspected the left wheel well.

When he moved to the right wheel well, Dani stopped in front of the wing.

Do you want me to take over the walk-around? she asked.

West shook his head. No. I think you should be the cockpit attendant. Get the cockpit checks done and ready for Charlie when she comes out. You know the drill. He smiled when she nodded.

Yes, sir. I can do that.

    Z:\Y - Notes and Background Data\eBook Break Images\EW Books\eBook POV Break P-51 Image - Isolated.png

THAT’S THE LAST ONES. Ratchet straightened up from leaning over the desk to read the laptop screen. I must admit I like the new system, Charlie.

Thanks. I was hoping it would help.

It does, he admitted, especially since we’ve fine-tuned the lists for each airplane model. Still takes time to review, but the flags sure help to know if there’s something missing or in conflict. Nice going.

I guess we’re ready. Charlie stood up, stretching the ache from her shoulders. She looked around, puzzled.

Dani came down and picked up your helmet and gloves, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Okay. She chuckled. She’s becoming very thorough.

She certainly is. I think it’s very nice having the female influence and intuitiveness around here.

Charlie looked sideways at him as they started walking to the ramp and the planes beyond.

You know—Ratchet chuckled—the different way a female thinks. I hope you will take this the right way, but I like the positive changes you brought to the ranch when you came. And how your presence brought Dani and Eddie out to train. And now even Bump has changed, seeing Dani for who she is, what she wants, making him want to do better. And that, in my opinion, is what brought the two of them together.

You almost sound a little envious, Mr. Powers. Charlie poked his shoulder. But unfortunately, Eddie and Camilla are a little young for an old man like you.

Sure. Ratchet smiled. I may be too old for the remaining children of the ranch, but forty isn’t old! I’ll just have to change where I’m looking and find that pilot-friendly bar that all of the eligible women mechanics and pilots hang out at.

    They laughed.

Maybe, I’ll just have to go to Stockton with you guys, Ratchet teased. And Reno is coming up.

Just stay away from the ‘pit bunnies’ and the other opportunists.

    They stopped beside My Affair.

Yes, ma’am. Ratchet smiled with a slight bow. I will every chance I get. He looked across to Hell Raiser and saw West climbing up on the wing. Looks like they’re about ready.

CHARLIE STUDIED THE cockpit indications as the oil and coolant temps slowly warmed. She absently went over each switch and control position again, glancing out at the rim of the mesa a mile and a half to their southwest. She had intentionally taxied northeast a half mile to give them the extra distance and a longer, slower takeoff roll.

She wondered why she was being so much more careful this time, repeating her checks more than twice. The thought of an engine failure on takeoff or a landing gear malfunction had nibbled at her thoughts, but she quickly chased the intruding thoughts away. She wondered if the incident at Bloomfield was causing her to doubt, but that was ridiculous; that was not flying, and this was. She shook her head, knowing she was prepared for this.

Eight’s ready, West announced a second time, and she looked over at him on her left wing.

She forced herself back to business and gave him a thumbs-up. Ghost Two is ready. I’ll start my run when you’re on downwind.

Roger, Ghost Two. West‘s voice was clear of the concern she had heard moments before. Ghost Ranch, Ghost One is rolling.

She watched as Hell Raiser accelerated, kicking up a cloudy trail of dust, marking the otherwise invisible route across the short prairie grass. They both were without drop tanks, and she smiled as Hell Raiser’s tail came up and it quickly broke ground.

Ghost One is airborne. West started his left pattern turn, staying low to be in position when he came around behind Charlie’s Other Man.

Good takeoff, Ratchet announced over the radio.

Thanks, Ghost Three, West said. "Get a measurement on Affair."

Will do. Ratchet and West casually referred to measuring her takeoff roll.

Charlie heard them talking, knowing he would be using a laser measuring device as she looked and saw West nearing the end of his downwind.

Ghost Ranch, Ghost Two is rolling. She slowly pushed My Affair’s throttle forward.

At about seventy the tail came up and she held the tail wheel just above the ground. At ninety, My Affair wanted to fly and she let it lift off.

"My Affair is airborne, Charlie announced softly, and retracted the flaps. Climbing at one twenty-five."

She glanced over her left shoulder and was instantly comforted seeing Hell Raiser about a wing span out in her eight o’clock position.

    Looking clean, West admitted.

I’ll retract the gear when we’re up in the test area, Charlie said, completely back to the business at hand. Turning left and climbing.

Ghost Two, Helen’s voice calmly spoke in Charlie’s headphones. Telemetry indicates all systems are functioning as expected, all parameters are in the green.

Ghost Two concurs. Charlie settled down on altitude for her first test card points. Starting test condition one, gear retraction.

I t’s Jess, West explained as he touched Charlie’s shoulder and answered his phone.

Charlie ducked out from under the left wheel well of Richard Mendelson’s D model 51, Gold Rush, wiped her hands, and followed West to the locker room.

Hey, Jess, West said as Charlie closed the door. We’re both here.

Good morning, West, Charlie, Jessie said. "I have an update for you and have sent copies. Seems your man Howard sent nine emails yesterday to his colleagues, asking for time to meet them concerning the availability of their pledged assets. None of them actually replied. He sent emails to an Ableman, a Carolton, a Dufmat, Gibbings, Lunas, Myers, Newit, Olgana, and Scott. And it appears he left yesterday for the East Coast.

"He emailed the man Monte via his phone on Friday, saying he and his wife were taking a vacation and were going to New England and then to North Carolina. He didn’t say how long he was going
