Eyez of Lyfe - Khali Raymond
The Ghetto, An Undercover Zoo
Welcome to the ghetto, ya’ll.
Here is where the savages
Gather and galore.
The killers running through the blocks, holding shit down.
My city feels like a war zone
Because they got me holed up
In a halfway abandoned building.
The big trees, covered with spray paint.
Windows smashed out.
The vines, all the sneakers
Tied onto the power lines.
Tarzan running through the Bricks
With a nine in his right hand.
Crackheads swinging from each tree to the next—
tryna’ get their next hit.
Why is it that there’s all these scavengers
Looking for someone to pickpocket?
I look to my left, I look to my right
The air is filled with the aroma of Newports and gunsmoke.
The stampede is coming, the boys in blue.
Everyone taking cover from all directions.
Raking leaves, those are dead bodies in the streets.
All these villages
Represent different sets of my hood.
These huts.
The dens filled with paraphernalia
Guns, stress, and abuse
And where’s the water?
The Mason/Dixon of my neighborhood
Is the poor and dingy being segregated
From the rich and classy.
Do you know what the ghetto is in disguise?
It’s an undercover zoo.
