PART ONE
1.0 Definition of Terms:
Guidance:
The context of this manual identifies three main terms, i.e. guidance, counseling and training. The term ‘’guidance’’ is a derivative of the noun ‘’guide’’, which means: - to lead or direct in the right way or a person who lead or shows the way or a book/booklet of instructions or practical information.
Guidance in this sense is the act of leadership either as a parental or moral duty or spiritual calling or professional undertaking. It may involve a branch of educational psychology where the trainer is expected to know the methods of teaching and instructional delivery or science of persuasion by way of empathizing with the learner and effective employment of communication skills on part of the trainer.
Thus guidance is here understood to imply leadership by way of giving good advice, suggestions or directions to an individual who may likely encounter and/or experience unique problems or difficulties in future. These problem may manifest themselves as either psychological (stress, spiritual or lack of self-esteem or emotional disturbances) or material wants (economic hardships).
Thus, the vocation of guidance is desired to instill a sense of well-being and influence positive response to the problem and constructive avoidance by the individual who would likely confront it head-on in future.
Counseling:
On the other hand, counseling is here taken to mean the act of listening attentively or reaching out to an individual who may be having or experiencing the adverse effects of a problem or hardship or difficulties.
Training:
Training as an educational process
