Introduction
Hello and a very big welcome to Gardening for Beginners Digital Book Edition
and a very special thank you for acquiring this book.
Gardening is a great pastime for folk of any age and I hope such an interest will bring you many years of joy and happiness. William Agutter my Grandfather first taught me to Garden as a small boy in the early 1960’s, a period now spanning over 50 plus years and just as enthusiastic today as I was then.
Horticulture as a pastime provides countless benefits in our lives, one especially being living a healthier and more rounded lifestyle from free exercise, fuelling the body, mind and soul in this frenetic technology driven world of virtual reality today. Your gardening is also a great contribution towards the health of the environment by providing micro eco systems to filter out toxins, provide habitats for many wild life friends and reducing the risk of flooding to your home and community by having a fusion of colour around your house instead of paving and concrete.
Having a great passion and interest for Gardening, I wanted to write a book on the subject to help and encourage more folk to take up the hobby with confidence, so they can grow an array of plants for family and loved ones to enjoy in magnificent colour and organic vegetables for a far healthier eating lifestyle.
So please enjoy this book and I hope it becomes a valuable friend and companion.
Sincere Best Wishes,
Alastair Agutter
Garden Tools
Today there are many different types of tools and products on the market in our consumer driven world to choose from. But gardening tools become very special companions and the more you use them they almost become a part of you.
Garden Tools that last: Garden Fork, Hoe and Rake - Photograph by Alastair R Agutter
When acquiring Gardening tools, it is wise from the very outset to buy tools that will last a life time and by doing so, helping towards this fragile environment we all know as home, Mother Earth we are being an environmentally friendly humanitarian.
If you like a bargain in the real extreme, you can sometimes buy old garden tools from boot sales, bric-a-brac markets and antique shops.

If you are unable to attain tools from any of the above venues, always try your local ironmongers, garden nursery centre or finally your DIY store.
Always look out for sturdy well-made metal and wooden handled tools made in England, USA or Germany.
Do not buy cheap tools that will not last and especially ones that are plastic, for such materials today never have enough oil properties in the material and very often over cooked in the injection moulding process, thus removing all the oils. As a result, these inferior tools are very brittle and break. You are also helping the environment by not buying such cheap and useless products made from fossil oils.
With Wooden and metal tools they are easier to maintain and repair. For example, if a hoe shaft breaks you can always replace the wooden shaft with another acquired from your local ironmongers.

In the two previous pictures above they show garden sheers, secateurs, sieve and a small stainless steel wooden handled fork. These tools will become essential companions in your gardening exploits and frequently used.
So as to preserve the health of your tools if you do have a little extra spare space in your Garden is to invest in a shed. As they can be extremely helpful work areas if benched out properly, where you can plant seeds in boxes, winter bulbs, pot on plants and take cuttings.
Tools do become very personal items and over the years there seems to be something magical about them when stored in the garden shed, retaining priceless memories of season’s gone bye.

A Garden shed is always a venue Grand Children like to venture and explore, especially where I am sure they pick up those vibrations of family history and traditions that hopefully serve them well in the future!
Here I have listed items I describe as essential Gardening Tools to get you started, please always remember to try and acquire metal and wooden handled tools that will last a life time and help towards saving the environment. Thank you!
Essential Garden Tools List: Fork, Hoe, Rake, Small Hand Held Fork, Sieve, Sheers and Secateurs.
Garden Equipment
As you further engage in your new gardening pastime, you will invariably find you require more items in addition to essential tools.
Garden Equipment: A Garden Propagator and Handheld Spray Container - Photograph by Alastair R Agutter
A good sized ‘Watering Can’ is an essential gardening piece of equipment and it is wise again to invest in a metal galvanized type that will last a life time and can be purchased from your local ironmongers, garden or DIY centre.
Garden propagators as seen in the picture above will become a regular useful piece of gardening equipment for seedlings and cuttings. Garden propagators
