We might have passed for brother and sister, Elise and me. There was no outward show of affection, just a sexual tension we each felt, but never acknowledged. We were typical high school seniors, bored and anxious to be out of school for good. One rainy winter’s day with spring and the end of school far away, we decided to cut class and escape. We left school separately and met up at our little hiding place, a circle of trees surrounding a soft mat of leaves and grass in the center of Simpson Woods. Elise and her parents lived near there in what had been a hunting lodge. Her father served as a part-time caretaker of the land in addition to being a deputy sheriff in town.
