Fenwick stopped his axe at the apex of its backswing. He glared at Kimball. "I’m not making
this
up
."
Hunters invented the gargantu,
said Kimball, continuing to chop his axe into the groove they had made in the four-foot-wide sequoia, so they could frighten the ignorant and make themselves sound important. It’s no more real than elves or the interest of that dancer you say fancied you at the last faire.
All right.
Fenwick resumed chopping as he spoke. "I was lying about the
dancer

"
Hah!
Kimball stopped to point a gloating finger. "I knew that beauty’d never go for the likes
of
you
."
In truth, she might have if Fenwick had had the courage to approach her. While neither of the two young friends had looks that would inspire songs, their work kept them fit and strong, and paid well enough. Fenwick’s mind, however, was on neither that dancer nor his own romantic prospects.
I know what I saw last night and it was real.
Fenwick slammed his axe head into the dirt and spat near Kimball’s feet to get his attention. Kimball cut loose a sigh and gave him a bored look, axe held loosely in his hands. Fenwick continued over the rhythmic sounds of the other timbermen, gesturing for emphasis. "Half tall as this tree and broader across than the main road through town. It had

Oh, enough already. If you want to tell stories, stick to the bawdy ones. They’re more entertaining and not much less likely.
Back to work you two,

Fenwick and Kimball picked up their axes and returned to felling their tree. The air about them smelled of fresh wood, sap, and sweat.
