    Steve hated coming to Harvey’s, but he did it at the end of every workday because by the time he reached the end of his two p.m. shift at Wrenchco Auto World, Steve needed a drink. And Harvey’s, well…

    As bars went, it wasn’t much. Whole building would have fit in the back of a semi, with room to spare. The ceiling was painted black, but still had ring stains from water damage and cloudy ones from smoke. The walls had that same black paint, but they were covered with several Forty-Niners posters and even more pictures of the Gold Rush Cheerleaders.

    The whole place smelled like old beer, pretzels, stale cigarette smoke, and cheap lacquer. Sadly, this was a refreshing change from the grease and motor oil of Steve’s work day. Still, the stale cigarette smoke tended to hang onto his clothes, and the lacquer left a bitter taste on his tongue until
