W hat aren’t you telling me, Rox?
Nothing. There’s nothing to tell. Can’t a girl go visit her sister without causing an interdimensional incident?
Lying had never come easy for the Guardian of Taurus. It made her heart ache and the creatures with whom she shared her soul sad. But in this case, it was necessary. The mission always came before all else.
I don’t believe you,
Zoe, her youngest sister, the Guardian of Cancer and a real pain in the butt, insisted. Narrowing her amber eyes, the fiery redhead added, If what you’re saying is true, why is Doirean going with you? He never goes anywhere but to train, swim or run the fields.
Trying not to explode, Roxane took a deep breath as she stuffed several T-shirts and a few pairs of jeans into her bag on top of her throwing stars. She’d hoped to be done packing before any of her sisters got wind of her travel plans, but true to form, Zoe with her whacked out perception made it impossible to get away with anything.
He wants to see Earth. You know he and Drákon are close.
Roxane looked over her shoulder and forced a smile. Besides, you know I never go anywhere without him.
And that was the truth. Ever since her fifth birthday when her father, Poseidon, had pulled the beaten and drowning little bull shark from the depths of the ocean, given him the powers to change not only to a human but also a powerful, ebony bull, and charged Roxane with his training, the two had been inseparable. Rumors that they were lovers had been swirling about the God of the Sea’s domain for centuries, but couldn’t have been more wrong.
Yeah, sure, he was good-looking. Six-foot-five with shoulder length ebony hair, brilliant green eyes and muscles upon muscles upon muscles, but Roxane saw past all that. She saw his heart with its incredible ability to love, the goodness that filled his soul and the adoration he had for all things great and small and knew she’d found a kindred spirit. Their relationship surpassed anything sexual, even the bond of Fated Mates. Doriean was her brother, her rock, the one person who always had her back no matter what. He was the calm in a sea of sisters and gave the Guardian the peace and strength a Daughter of Poseidon needed to do what was asked of her.
Watching her sister pace, Roxane thought about just telling Zoe what was really going on, actually opened her mouth to speak, but then the words her father had spoken just a few short hours ago echoed through her mind. You must tell no one but Doriean, my beautiful Amazonian daughter. For only you, with the magic from your mother, Naomi – daughter of the goddess Hecate and a great Hunter of Artemis – have the power to defeat the malicious forces working to take over the Earth.
Thanks, dad. You sure know how to make things easy for a girl…
Trying to think of a way to distract her petulant sister, Roxane breathed a sigh of relief as Doriean walked into the room with Duarte, Zoe’s Companion, in tow. Hey, ladies. What’s up?
The Shark shifter winked. I found this guy wandering about the fields looking for an archery partner.
Doriean slapped the Sea Eagle on the back before crossing the room and nudging Zoe with his elbow. How could you leave him hanging like that? Bad Guardian…bad, bad Guardian,
he pretended to smack the back of her hand.
Roxane couldn’t help but smile. If anyone could distract Zoe, it was Doriean. His sense of humor, jovial demeanor and upbeat take on damn near everything had even been known to make the mighty Poseidon laugh over the years.
Fighting not to smile, Zoe finally gave in, grinned and raised a single eyebrow. I was busy interrogating my sister about your trip to Earth.
Pushing up on her toes, she kissed Doriean on the cheek and batted her eyes, "So,
