    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    Chapter One

Sam drew a hand across his mouth, wiping the pink, sugary mess from his lips.

Yuck, said his sister Jess. Why do you always spread your food all over your face?

I don’t, protested Sam indignantly, still wiping his mouth.

But, if you don’t lick your lips you can’t enjoy your food as much. Try eating a marshmallow without licking your lips at all, go on, just try it. You too Gran.

Everyone popped another squishy pink marsh-mallow into their mouths.

Gran was the first to lick her lips. You’re right, she laughed. It’s impossible! She watched her grandchildren from over the top of her metal fram-ed reading glasses, the lines around her eyes deepening as she laughed along with the children.

Jess, you licked your lips! accused Sam.

Both Sam and Jess watched Jake, Gran’s black and white boarder collie dog, as he nuzzled each of them in turn with his soft, but very wet black nose. His fine whiskers were well known for tickling any bare skin, and always brought a smile to their faces. Jess always thought that it was his way of kissing.

Apart from Gran, Sam and Jess were the two people that Jake loved most, and after waiting such a long time to see them again, Jake was now making sure that they were really there. It was not only Gran who had missed the two children.

They were all sitting by the open fireside in Gran’s Cottage, Talltrees, on the North York Moors, which huddled between the rolling hills of the National Park, and kissed the ocean with it’s edges of purple heather.

Talltrees nestled on the edge of a small wood that could boast not only the oldest but the tallest trees on the moors, which was how Talltrees had got it’s name. Little paths, originally made by rabbits and other wild
