    Chapter One

Sam popped another piece of popping candy into his mouth, almost laughing out loud as it immediately began to tickle his tongue. He sat back in the train seat and wriggled into a more comfortable position before he replayed his favourite day dream.

Long summer days by the ocean, crazily racing in and out of the tumbling waves, and then messing about by gurgling streams, skimming stones, and catching tadpoles in a jam jar.

He sighed blissfully, as the visions danced around his mind. For so long his fantasies had seemed just that - fantasies. The real world of school and studying always got in the way of his daydreams. Not anymore though. Sam felt he could almost reach out a hand and feel the coolness of the refreshing stream water, or even taste the salt air of the sea on his tongue, as stream met sea and became one.

He had to admit that saying goodbye to Mum at the railway station, had brought a strange lump to his throat, and for one horribly embarrassing moment, Sam had felt a sad little tear try to squeeze its way out of his eye, but eleven year old boys don’t cry, do they! Not when they are about to embark on a train journey deep into the glorious county of Yorkshire. Sam was about to spend three wonderful weeks with his Gran at Talltrees, her impressively old cottage which nestled within the beautiful North York Moors.

The rambling old cottage was situated on a narrow country lane, a few miles inland between Ravenscar and Robin Hoods Bay. The area was steeped in history. A history that held intriguing and exciting twists and turns around every corner of its narrow cobbled streets. Sam was now only minutes away from all the adventures he could ever hope to find.

The only downside Sam could see was that his twelve year old sister Jess was coming too, but as sisters go, Jess was alright, and they got along fine, most of the time. Sam looked across at his sister, her long dark hair falling like a curtain over her face as she read a magazine.

How can you read that boring stuff, he said, excitement bubbling away inside him. We’re almost there!

Sam could hardly keep still as the familiar countryside approaching their destination began to

pass the window at a slower pace. It had been a long journey from Kings Cross station, with a change of train at York, and now Sam could not wait to stretch his legs.

I don’t know why you are so exited. We’ve been here loads of times before. mumbled Jess, as she
