Chapter One

The pain felt like a sharp knife being thrust into his side. He could feel the touch of its lethal pointed tip as it began to affect his breathing, which came in short, shallow gasps. He felt hot and sweaty, even though the air had that normal February chill about it that could penetrate your skin just as easily as the sharpness of a knife, which at the moment seemed to be doing it’s best to slice him in two.

Sam stopped in his tracks, and held on with both hands to the sharp pain which attacked the left side of his body.

Hang on a minute, Jess, he panted. I’ve got a stitch in my side.

Jess turned around and looked back at her younger brother. He was leaning with his back against an old beech tree, blowing out gusts of air between clenched teeth.

It was the middle of February and the tree showed no outward signs of life. Its bare branches reached for the sky, as if seeking warmth from the weak, watery sun, which sat low on the pale blue horizon.

Are you okay? Jess asked, retracing her steps back to Sam along the narrow path, which they had been following on the North York Moors.

I’ll be alright in a minute, he said with a grin, almost ready to continue their steady climb over the rough terrain.
