    Preface

So it turns out a lot of people want to know who they’re receiving advice from before they read an entire book. I’ve been doing this whole music shebang for about thirteen years now, and have been running the blog How To Music Major for two years, recently acquiring a new domain for more accessibility. I’m less than a month out from receiving my vocal performance and music industry undergraduate degrees in only four years, which, let me tell you, does not seem to be the trend among my friends. I have two majors, I’ve taken, on average, 19.4 credits per semester in my time in college, and I’m going to graduate summa cum laude. I’ve also worked a 25 hour work week for the past two years, as well as landed an internship in arts administration.

I’m not saying this to brag. I also forget assignment due dates if they’re not written down, I live primarily on Cheetos some weeks, and I once wore shower shoes to class because I just hadn’t noticed I wasn’t wearing sneakers.

The reason I’m putting this all here at the beginning of this eBook is because you need to trust that I’m at least moderately successful at this whole music major deal if you’re gonna believe the rest of the book.

I’m writing this guide because I want it to be easier for other musicians to succeed in college music programs. I have yet to find a guide out there that actually walks you through, step by step, all of the stuff you need in order to do well in music programs. We musicians, as a whole, are not the most organized of people, and I know I would have killed for a guide like this. I hope this helps you on your journey into and through college, and that it helps you succeed at whatever your musical
