Chapter One
The Fighting between Lauren’s parents was nearly unbearable, completely uncomfortable. The retention of the day events’ flooded Lauren’s thoughts.
Other than the fighting that took place downstairs, the day was fairly clean, not only had she aced the major writing exam that she had been contemplating for weeks, her best friends had bragged about the young guy Malcolm Conway was his name Lauren believed, he was that one male that walked the college halls, making every single girl cream her panties. Yep, nothing reminded her of High School than that single female college student who behaved like a teenager being led by her hormones.
No college was easy, but it was doable, until that moment Lauren regrettably stepped foot through that old wooden front door.
Where the fuck were you at?
Lauren’s drunken mother spoke as she frowned toward her daughter.
I was at school.
Was Lauren’s reply as she walked past her wobbling mother, proceeding toward the stairs that head to the only sane place in that household.
I don’t understand why you reckon you merit to go to that fancy school. You will always be garbage!
Her mother barked at her, moments after Lauren closed her bedroom door.
Putting out a deep sigh, she then went to her desk studying. Honest, it was once a throw away, but with a piddling bit of passion, it was fixable, and it performed well for her homework and her works.
Spreading out the top drawer swiftly, she drew out a package of gram crackers, only to open her water bottle, twisting the top off; she needed a beverage before taking a bite out of a gram cracker.
She didn’t know if god was punishing her for her father’s gambling and her mother’s greediness when it came to money, which was her life for as long as she thought back.
She sighed, not being irritated to do her work, just recognizing that her lack of compactness was the problem, standing up she went swiftly away from her desk to the door, hearing a loud banging sound against the front doorway.
Recognizing it was probably her drunken father; her mother must have locked him out once again.
Who-who the fuck are you?
Her mother’s voice rang through the emptiness of the household.
It doesn’t matter who we are Mrs. Burke. Your husband had placed your daughter in a pool in his poker game. My master has agreed to take her to clean off your family’s debt. Then we were transported here to retrieve a Miss Lauren Burke, she is now the property of Mr. Jackson Reid.
The male spoke in a calming tone.
Lauren then found herself walking out of her room and onto the flight of stairs, slowly walking toward them.
A fairly tall yet built male stood, at attention, his arms behind his back every bit if he was in the army, in the middle of the living room.
His hair was the shade of darkness, more like a raven black, he tired out all black, a walkie talkie earpiece in his proper ear, a couple of dark sunglasses hid his eyes.
Holy Fucking Shit! These human beings belonged to THE
Jackson Reid. The Playboy multi-billionaire of the city. Everyone knew both his name and reputation.
I don’t fucking care, she’s my problem, she’s not someone else’s!
Her mother spat out as she wobbled.
Mrs. Burke, I am fully aware that you are the girl’s mother, but a deal is a deal. She was invested as a bet, the rules must be stuck to. Mr. Reid is willing to take to pay for the moving and to give you a fresh slate on debt along with granting you some additional cash in your pockets.
The male responded as he then shifted to see Lauren standing on the rear set of stairs.
No, if I go with you. Just clean their debt, don’t pay them whatever money.
Lauren Murmured.
As you wish Miss Lauren,
The male responded with a nod motioning her out into the night that remained on the other side of the doorway, I will send for your things tomorrow.
With a mere nod, Lauren followed him toward the threshold, only to watch the male holding out her coat, allowing to slide her left arm in followed by the right.
Within minutes after walking through the door, the delicate scent of fresh rain filled her nostrils, the rain pelted down, producing a light mist on the surface of the earth.
The male appeared beside Lauren as he drew out an umbrella out to keep her dry; leading her to a clearly new expensive 2017 Cadillac Escalade, even in the cold raining right you could see the beautiful black of the car only lit up by the almost hidden moon.
Thank you, sir.
Lauren spoke as she looked over at the male from the recess of her eyes.
You’re quite welcome Miss Lauren, my name is Chase. I am Mr Reid’s butler and his personal security guard. Please let me know if you require anything.
The male known as Chase spoke to her as he afforded the back passenger door for her, giving a fresh smile to Chase, Lauren began climbing into the back seat of that pitch black four door 2017 Cadillac Escalade.
The dark leather seats made it comfortable to slide in as Lauren buckled herself in as Chase closed the doorway behind her, waiting patiently as Chase opened the driver door only to slip out of the rain, after closing his door, he then put the key into the ignition, flipping it over only to have the engine roaring to life.
Chase, is there a reason Mr. Reid wants me? Other than winning me in that stupid bet.
Lauren asked, her attention held out the window as the rain fogged her view.
Yes, ma’am, his real intentions are to take a wife before his 29th birthday, he wishes for an heir.
Chase replied not taking his eyes off the road.
I see.
Lauren spoke the words softly as she expelled a heavy sigh as the Escalade began to draw to a point in
