Fire in the Sky - L. D. Carson

    Nico

    You know what goes next.

    -1-

I was in the air before anyone could react, flying as fast as my shadow wings could take me in the daylight. My heart was going a million miles a minute, fueled by the fear of what danger Friday might be in. Pepper zapped her way in front of me. Her arms were outstretched in a motion meant to command a halt, and she was shouting, Skye, where are you going? What's going on? I didn't listen to her and just knocked her out of my way as I blew past. No one was going to stop me. Behind me I heard a roar, and about a second later a brown dragon with a scattering of yellow scales was in front of me. I tried to power past her again, but she was ready for me this time. She grabbed me with her large claws and grappled me into a lock. I struggled against her full-ragon strength, but was too frantic to think about how to break the lock without slicing myself. So every jerk of my body brought me against the business end of a rather large, sharp object. Finally we touched ground in one of the numerous south Texas fields. Pepper didn't let me loose, though, and in the distance I saw Cassius flying toward us, Pepper's clothes in hand. He landed and threw Pepper's clothes onto the ground in a frustrated gesture, which was answered by a short growl from Pepper.

What was that about? He asked with a voice that was shaking with anger.

I was still struggling against Pepper, and didn't answer him. He walked up to me and held my face in his hands, forcing me to look in his eyes. They were a bright red with slits for pupils. He reached out with his energy and touched my fire half; the half of me that was him. He made the frantic spirit calm down enough that I could think, and I stopped struggling against Pepper.

Are you ready to talk like a sane person again? Cassius asked.

I nodded, and Pepper let me go. I felt the burst of energy when she changed back into human form. She glared at me, but spoke to Cassius as she walked past to get her clothes. Thanks for throwing my things in the dirt.

Cassius had let my face go and stepped back, but he still held onto my energy with his own. He turned his head in the vague direction of Pepper, but kept those red eyes  locked on me. Be grateful I brought them at all. He said to Pepper. Then he just looked at me expectantly.

I took a deep breath, sighed, and began, I called Frost, and Jason answered her phone. He told me he was 'disappointed in my two-faced nature, as well as the incompetence of our current ruling body.' He said he was going to 'fix things' and hung up. I don't know what he's planning to do to Frost, but she's in danger, and it's my job - legitimately - to make sure nothing bad happens to her.

Pepper commented, you're doing a bang up job so far.

Both Cassius and I turned to her and said, shut up, Pepper.

I began storming over to her, but Cassius blocked my path. I ended up speaking at her around him, What about you, Asshole's-little-helper? Did you know about that little plot of his?

I did not, actually, She said. She was looking at the ground in...shame? He had just told me to take care of the Sabier business, and that he was going on a trip.

I guess  he didn't favor you as much as you thought, I said with perhaps a little more of a seething tone than I should have, because Cassius gave me a warning look and Pepper looked like she was about to cry.

No, she said softly. He never did favor me as much as he did you. Now clothed, she spread her wings and flew off without another word.

Cassius was shaking his head like I'd kicked a puppy. I knew that the comment had been mean, but I didn't think it would cut that deep. I'm missing something, I said.

Molly and Pepper had a bit of competition for Jason, Cassius replied. Molly won, of course, and Pepper never forgave her. So Jason acting the way he did, when he found out who you were, was kind of a slap in the face.

Ouch. And I just rubbed salt in the wound. Awesome. I put my face in my palm. I don't have time for this. I need to get to Akna su Kara.

What you need is to calm your tits and come home so we can have a plan. You remember what that is, right? That thing that makes you less likely to get killed.

    Home?

Yeah. You're part of The Family. Family takes care of each other. He reached out a hand to me. So come on. Everyone wants to know what happened.

I nodded solemnly and we both began the flight back to the house. The entire way I couldn't shake the intense feeling that I needed to get to Frost as soon as possible. I just knew that she was in trouble, and that was enough to leave me in a contemplative silence as I flew. Every so often Cassius would give me a concerned look, but he didn't say anything, either because he couldn't think of anything or didn't want to say something wrong. Either way it was out of character for him. Luckily for both of us the flight wasn't very long, and soon we saw the familiar stretch of houses that signified we were home.

As soon as I walked in the door, Shelby and Jen were asking me what happened and ushering me away to the back rooms, and away from the bustling mass of people that was in the living room. I gave them the same explanation that I had given Cassius and Pepper. This got mixed reactions from the girls that ranged from telling me to go help her to saying I should leave her to rot for how she essentially dumped me just a couple days prior. I just nodded at all the suggestions. They all sounded like the right answer, but  also sounded wrong at the same time. Finally they all just kind of fell quiet and looked at me, then each other, then gave me a group hug and told me it would all be okay. I didn't know how to react, so I just stood awkwardly in the wad of bodies.

Finally Cassius Poked his head into the room and said, Travis, Pepper, and I are ready to discuss the strategy, if you are.

    Shelby
