Better to die fighting for freedom than be a prisoner all the days of your life.
-Bob Marley
Chapter 1
The interrogation room was dimly lit and dreary with grey walls. Sitting at the old, cracked table were a man and woman. Tensions were high between the two. The woman confidently stared into the two way mirror. The man on the other hand, who was new to the facility, appeared confident but the woman in front of him could tell he was nervous.
You saw the picture; now tell me what you know.
He was irritated by her refusal to acknowledge him. Alpha 411, I need an answer!
I have a name you know,
she snapped.
We don’t use names in here.
Her frizzy blonde hair flew in her face as she yelled. I know that, I’ve been here for five years!
She immediately regained her composure. She calmly pulled her hair out of her face, revealing her sky blue eyes. Her flushed cheeks quickly returned to the same sickly pale tone as the rest of her skin.
Then you should know the drill by now.
You’re the new guy so I’m going to let this one slide but after your boss gets here in a minute, you’re going to find out exactly who you’re dealing with.
What’s that supposed to mean?
It means I don’t cooperate with you people. Not since the day I learned what’s really going on in this hellhole.
You have to tell me what you know,
he said desperately.
Your boss is about to walk through that door to tell you all about me.
The door opened and in walked an older man with noticeable wrinkles. Despite his skin being a subtle shade of orange and his slicked back salt and pepper hair, no one dared make fun of him. His permanently stern, green eyes made him intimidating to almost everyone in the facility. He was the one who could make life in the facility even more of a nightmare for anyone he wanted.
How did you know that?
he asked, stunned by her accuracy.
Alpha 411, you can go back now.
My name is Lottie!
Don’t be ridiculous, your real name is Charlotte. Now it’s time for you to leave.
Lottie slid her chair away from the table. Be careful Timmy, your boss bites.
How did you know my name?
The color drained from his usually pinkish face.
Only his wife ever called him Timmy. He much preferred Tim. He ran his fingers through his short brown hair as he thought about what happened between him and Lottie since he sat down. He realized he never mentioned his name. There was no way she could have known. He wiped the sweat from his brow and loosened his tie.
Tim’s brown eyes locked onto Lottie as she smiled mischievously and left the interrogation room. Jay, what just happened?
Jay made sure Lottie wasn’t outside listening in and closed the door. That was Alpha 411. She is a highly skilled psychic we acquired.
Chapter 2
Lottie made her way into the cafeteria and took her seat at the table that had been hers for five years. She had no desire to eat; she only wanted to get out of this place.
You’re not eating again, Lottie?
She looked up at those bright blue eyes and wavy red hair. Matt, do we have to go through this every time?
Matt placed his tray on the table across from Lottie and sat down. Yes, you’ve been in here five years and I’ve had to force you to eat every day.
I never asked you to do this for me.
I know.
He handed her half of his sloppily made peanut butter sandwich. It’s my responsibility to take care of you.
No it’s not,
she argued. You’re just as trapped as I am.
Yeah…well…I still care about you.
Matt, we didn’t know each other until we got here.
What’s your point?
You’ve been giving me half of your sandwiches since day one. There’s no way you could have cared about me back then.
I cared enough to not want you to starve that day.
And every day after that,
Lottie added.
She thought he was annoying at first because of his gentle nature and insistence on making sure she was healthy. But after everything they had been through together, she grew fond of Matt. She didn’t want to let it show or the tyrants running the place would use it against her.
Hi, do you mind if I sit here?
A shaking girl stood to the left of Lottie. Her brown eyes filled with fear, fixed on the ground. Her tanned skin clean and smelling of rose scented soap and her curly, black hair neatly done told Matt and Lottie that the scared girl in front of them was new to the facility.
You can sit next to me,
Lottie answered.
Are you new here?
Matt asked.
Yes,
the new girl nervously said.
What’s your name?
Lottie asked.
Sophie.
I’m Lottie, and this is Matt.
Sophie smiled weakly. It’s nice to meet you.
Matt nodded. You too.
You look so young,
Lottie observed.
I’m sixteen.
Tears filled her eyes. What is this place?
It doesn’t have an official name but everyone who ends up here calls it the eternal flame,
Matt answered.
Why’s that?
The eternal flame is known as the place where souls go to die,
Lottie began. Once a soul is destroyed in the eternal flame, it can never go back to what it once was. The same goes for this place. Once you get sent here, you can never go back to your old life.
How long have you guys been here?
Five years,
Matt and Lottie answered simultaneously.
Why are they keeping us here?
The United States government has spent years trying to turn psychics into weapons,
Matt explained.
They’ve been using us for experiments,
Lottie added. And when they think someone is ready, they’re forced into becoming soldiers.
W-what kind of experiments do they do?
Sophie stammered.
Matt and Lottie stared at each other, wondering if they should tell Sophie the truth. After being imprisoned in the eternal flame for five years, they had seen it all. Some of it was gruesome and others were tame.
What have you experienced so far?
Matt asked.
I was questioned about what I did to land myself in here and then they asked me to prove I had the abilities I told them about,
Sophie answered.
Lottie’s face filled with concern. Did you tell them about all of your abilities?
No, just the ones I’m good at.
Don’t tell them about the rest,
Matt said.
A look of
