    Psychotic Break - Yvi Valentin

    Chapter 1

There’s no time to come up with a plan, I said in a panic. We have to get out of here now!

    Why? Eve asked.

I could feel my mom’s nerves as she thought of the possibilities. What did you hear?

Lucifer ordered Evan to erase all of our memories. He doesn’t even want us to remember we’re related.

How are we going to get out of here? Worry was painted all over my sister’s face.

We’re going to have to improvise. I was scared and had no idea what to do but I always came up with a plan. I had no other choice.

Aimee, do you think you can break the window and bars? It was like a light bulb in my mom’s head switched on. I was relieved to know she had somewhat of a plan.

I don’t know, I answered hesitantly. Even if I could, I don’t think it’ll be quiet enough for us to escape without getting caught.

Then we’ll have to work fast, she replied.

I don’t even know if I can do it. I was frazzled. I knew I needed to act fast because Evan was closing in on us. I focused on the glass and what I wanted to do. In seconds, it shattered. I knew it was only a matter of time before Evan and Lucifer came to see what was going on. I placed a hand on two of the bars and concentrated on my energy. I felt the heat within my body rise and pushed it all into my hands. It seemed to take forever but eventually the bars melted, creating a gap big enough for us to climb through.

What’s going on in here? Evan asked as he barged through the door.

Go! I yelled to my family.

They both climbed out the window as I prepared myself for the fight against Evan. I knew I couldn’t use electricity against him so I needed to figure out a different way to get him out of my hair long enough to escape. I must have been too distracted by my own thoughts because Evan managed to punch me right in the jaw. I heard the gasps from my mom and sister just outside the window.

Didn’t see that one coming did you? The smug look on Evan’s face only made me mad.

No, but next time you won’t be as lucky. I punched him in the eye and laughed. I don’t think anyone is going to want a president who gets into fights.

No one’s going to know about this, Evan snapped as he failed to hit me.

Don’t be so sure about that. I created a shield of ice that separated me and Evan. I wondered if I could trap him with it. I focused on it and the ice quickly surrounded him. I didn’t have long to escape so I ran to the window and attempted to climb out. I almost made it when I was pulled back into the room. Go find Andy! I yelled to my mom and sister who watched in horror.

Didn’t think you would get away that easily did you? Gina asked. Before I could answer, she had me pinned to the cot just like in my vision. There was a needle in her hand and I knew it was some sort of sedative.

    Well I had to try.

You’re never going to see Andy again, Evan said as he broke out of the ice.

I was scared he was right. I focused on the needle pointed at me and made it explode in Gina’s hand. There was hope for me yet. Gina rushed out of the room, to get a new needle I assumed. It made my job slightly easier, but I was scared Evan would succeed in replacing my memories. I wasn’t sure why, but my mind seemed so foggy. I was slower and didn’t know what to do. I wondered if Evan did something to me. I shielded myself against negative energy and watched as the black smoke rolled off of my body and through the floor. I was amazed by how quickly I felt better.

All I could do was smile as I knew what was about to happen.

What are you so happy about? Evan was pissed. You’re stuck in here with me.

Not for long. There was a huge grin on my face that quickly turned to laughter. It seemed a bit sinister for me and I wondered if I was becoming more like Lucifer. I definitely didn’t want that to happen. I heard Gina headed towards the room and could smell the same sedative she had before. The second Gina walked through the door I grabbed the needle from her and forced the sedative to run through her veins.

I guess we’ll see about that, Evan laughed.

I guess we will. I felt my entire attitude change. It was like I was a more confident and mischievous person. It was so unlike me, I couldn’t help but think I was somehow being manipulated. I forced the thought out of my mind as I realized what I had to do and how fast I needed to do it.

What’s taking so long? Lucifer asked as he entered the room.

I’m just not as cooperative as you thought I was going to be, I answered with a smirk. I wasn’t sure why I enjoyed the new attitude or how I acquired it. A small part of me thought it was because of Lucifer and it wasn’t going to end well for me.

No matter, everything will work itself out in the end. Lucifer’s pleasant attitude was unsettling.

We both know you’re not going to get your way.

And what do you think you’re going to do to stop me? he challenged.

Do you really think I’m dumb enough to tell you?

Well, it was worth a try. I knew he wasn’t going to give up that easily. It was Lucifer after all. He had something planned.

You know what’s going on with me, don’t you?

I don’t know what you’re talking about, he lied.

Come on, let’s just do this already! Evan shouted.

Oh, you mean erase my memory? Yeah, that’s not going to happen.

Oh yes it is, Evan said as he lunged towards me.

I quickly got out of his way, grabbed his head and threw him overhead to drop him to the floor. No, it’s not. I blocked Evan’s airway with my foot until he passed out. I didn’t know why I felt compelled to do it and it scared me knowing how much I enjoyed watching him suffer.

Now you only have one obstacle left, Lucifer pointed out.

Seems that way. On the outside I appeared calm but on the inside I was panicking. I had never really fought the devil and I wasn’t sure I could actually win. I knew he wouldn’t severely hurt me as long as I was needed. I wondered if I could create a distraction long enough to get away.

You’re wondering what’s happening to you. I didn’t respond. I wondered where he was going with this. You’re right; you are becoming more like me. I waited for him to get to the point. Do you want to know why?

I assumed you were going to tell me. Or do you just like playing games?

I do quite enjoy playing games when they suit me.

Just get to the point! I shouted.

You may have noticed you’ve been acting more like me lately. He waited for me to say something but I waited for him to finish his thought. It’s because you’re my daughter.

What does that have to do with anything?

Everything darling, he started, you see, because you have my blood running through your veins, you’re starting to inherit some of my qualities. The legends say that you have to choose between good and evil, but I know eventually you’ll succumb to the evil you’re starting to feel.

    You’re wrong.

I assure you I am not.

"I will never be anything like you!"

You already are, Lucifer said with a smile.

You’re insane, I whispered as I struggled with the new information.

Am I? You’re the one who doesn’t know what’s real.

I felt the anger within me rise. It was more energy than I had ever felt. I wondered if I could unleash it on Lucifer so I could make my escape. I let the anger build higher and higher until it was too much for me to bear. I screamed as I let the energy out. It was as if I had been set on fire. I quickly realized Lucifer didn’t expect it. He looked worried and ran out of the room. I assumed he went to get something to put out the fire. It may have been the only opportunity I had to get out. I was still in excruciating pain but I didn’t let it keep me from what I had to do. I swiftly climbed out the window and flew away.

    Chapter 2

I landed inside my Colorado home where I left the window open from the last time I was there with Andy. I realized my skin was smoldering. I wasn’t sure if there was anything I could do to stop it. The pain had lessened or maybe I got used to it. Whatever was going on with me was getting worse and I didn’t know how to stop it.

I wanted to check on the riding crop while I figured out where I could reconnect with Andy and my family. I listened for signs of anyone in the house. I was alone. I made my way down the stairs and into the safe room. I removed the painting and opened the safe. The money and jewelry were untouched. I took out the panel to reveal the container the riding crop was in. I opened it to find the same riding crop inside. I put everything back in its proper place and left the safe room.

I walked upstairs to my bedroom to change my clothes. I looked in my closet and pulled out a black and white striped sweater dress with floral lace detailing on the back. I grabbed a belt, a pair of red tights and black boots. I changed into my new outfit and realized the fire on my skin subsided but it didn’t make me feel any better.

What’s happening to me? I whispered to myself as I tried to hold back tears.

I suddenly felt compelled to go outside. I walked downstairs and towards the front door. I looked through the peephole to see if anyone was out there waiting for me. There was no one in sight. I couldn’t hear anyone either so I figured it was safe for me to leave. I stood there for longer than I should have leaning against the door. I wasn’t sure what was happening, but I felt the need to leave.

I went back to the upstairs window and flew out of the house. I couldn’t walk out the door because I didn’t have a key to the house and didn’t want to risk leaving it unattended and unlocked. Though I wasn’t sure the open window helped.

I walked down the street, unsure of where I was going, but I felt compelled to keep walking. I figured I would know when I reached my destination. I wondered where I was going as I took each turn. I was mesmerized as I walked. The closer I got to my destination, the more captivated I became. I had no clue where I was going, but I wasn’t worried. Nothing bad was going to come of this. The longer I walked, the more excitement rose within me.

Eventually I stood in front of a building. I realized I was on a college campus. I went inside and walked up the large staircase. I made my way into a classroom where a lecture took place. I wasn’t paying attention to a word the professor said. I walked towards a table in the back corner of the room and took a seat next to Andy.

Andy was obviously shocked to see me. Aimee, what are you doing here?

I was checking on the riding crop when I felt like I needed to come here. What are you doing here?

I figured once you escaped from Lucifer, you would want to check on the riding crop. I found out about a class here on warfare and decided to sit in.

Why? I looked at his notebook. Missiles?

Yeah, I thought taking this class would help us in the war against Lucifer.

Alright. I paused for a moment as I thought about what happened to me at the mental hospital. I have to tell you something.

    What is it?

Can we get out of here?

    Yeah, let’s go back home.

We left the school and made our way back to the house. Once we got inside I spoke. This is going to sound crazy.

    Did something happen?

My vision happened. I took a deep breath before I continued. I managed to get away before Evan could erase my memory, but something’s happening to me. I don’t know what exactly it is, but I know it can’t be a good thing.

I could feel Andy’s concern as he furrowed his brow. He knew the next thing I was going to say wouldn’t be anything good. What’s going on?

I think I’m becoming more like Lucifer.

    What makes you say that?

While I was stuck in the mental hospital, I fought Evan and Gina. I liked it. I felt my attitude change. I wasn’t myself anymore.

    What did you do?

I choked Evan until he passed out and I liked it. I liked watching him suffer. I felt like I was becoming more evil. I finally let the tears flow down my face. I can’t become him Andy.

Evan’s a bastard, Andy said as he tried to console me. I would enjoy watching him suffer too.

I was so horrible, Andy. I wasn’t myself.

We all get carried away sometimes.

Something else happened…right before I left.

    What was it?

I felt the anger in me rise. It was so intense and I went with it. I let it rise until I couldn’t handle it anymore. It was more energy than I’ve ever felt before. I thought if I let it out on Lucifer, I could get away but when I let it out… I trailed off as the tears streamed down my face even more.

It’s okay, you can tell me.

I know, I replied through the sobs. It’s just that…what happened to me…it’s not normal.

Didn’t you always tell me there’s nothing normal about you?

Yes. I let out a chuckle. But this is bad. I paused for a moment as I prepared myself to tell Andy what happened. I took a deep breath. When I let all that energy out, I burst into flames. It was how I could get away. Lucifer saw my body on fire and I assume he left to get something to put out the fire. He was worried, Andy. I don’t think he’s ever seen anything like it. I used that opportunity to get out.

How did you get out with all those guards and bars on the windows?

I shattered the windows and melted the bars.

I didn’t know you could do that.

I didn’t either; I just gave it a shot. It got my mom and sister out in time, but I wasn’t as lucky.

    Your family was in there!?

Yeah, Evan erased their memories and I managed to give them all of their memories back, not just the ones I thought about.

That has to be another ability Uriel gave you, he suggested.

It has to be. We sat there in silence for a moment as we thought. What are we going to do now?

What do you want to do?

I want to find my family. I told them to come find you before they left.

    How did you get separated?

After I made an exit for us, there was only enough time for them to get out. I was dragged back in and had to fight before I could get anywhere. I didn’t want them to get trapped too so I told them to leave without me.

    Alright, let’s go find them.

    Sounds like a plan.

Where do you think they are?

My best guess would be Chicago.

Let’s go, Andy said as he stretched out his hand to help me up.

Hold on. I hear something. There are two people walking towards the front door.

Can you tell who they are?

It’s my mom and sister. I let out a sigh of relief and ran to greet them. How did you find me?

I felt your energy, my mom answered. It’s weird, for the longest time I couldn’t and suddenly it appeared.

That’s because Aimee can hide her energy, Andy bragged.

I was just talking about coming to find you. I guess that’s when you started to feel my energy.

Now that we’re all together again, what are we going to do? Eve asked.

We should talk to Michael, Andy suggested.

    Eve looked confused. Why?

To give him an update and find out what to do next, I answered.

    Let’s go, my mom commanded.

Moments later we were at the Department of Critical Issues. The receptionist led us through the department and into the conference room where we met Michael so many times before.

You found your family. I couldn’t tell if Michael was shocked or impressed.

I didn’t really have much to do with it, I replied.

What do you mean? he asked.

Evan managed to capture me again. He took me to the mental hospital he kept my family trapped in.

Evan’s the antichrist, Andy blurted out before Michael could say a word.

Yes, I know, Michael said casually.

I felt my jaw drop. But how did you know?

And why didn’t you tell us before? Andy asked.

I was ordered not to, Michael responded.

We all looked at each other, confused and wondering who would be the one to ask the question we were all thinking. Eve finally spoke up. By who?

    God, he answered.

Why wouldn’t he let you tell us? Andy asked.

It was suddenly all clear to me. Because it was a test. He wanted to see if I could figure it out on my own.

    More than that, Michael interrupted.

He wanted to see what I would do with the information.

The expression on Michael’s face changed from calm and content to shocked and confused. How do you know this?

    I don’t know, I answered. I just know.

    Did you see Uriel?

Yes, and he gave me the rest of my abilities.

That explains it. Now we can get back to work.

What do we have to do now? my mom asked.

She’s not up to speed? Michael asked.

No, I was a little too busy to tell her about the horsemen. My attitude shocked everyone in the room, myself included.

Besides finding the remaining horsemen and their artifacts, you have an army to build, Michael pointed out.

I thought Holly was in charge of that. I didn’t want to admit to anyone that I didn’t want to deal with an army of any kind but it seemed obvious.

    She is, Andy said.

But you have to help her, Michael added. This is your fight and you have to be the one in charge.

Alright, I’ll get in touch with Holly. Is that all we need to focus on for now?

Michael gave me a stern look. It was almost like he didn’t fully trust me. Yes, but I will still need you to come back for weekly updates.

    Of course, I answered.

Andy grabbed my arm as I stood up to leave. Aimee, wait. Shouldn’t we tell Michael about what happened to you?

No, I’ve got a handle on it, I mumbled.

    What’s going on? Michael asked.

    It’s nothing, I lied. I’m fine.

Are you sure? Michael asked suspiciously.

I felt my cheeks warming up. Yes.

Aimee, it’s not fine, Andy protested. This could be a bad thing.

What are you talking about, Andy? Mom asked with concern all over her face.

Andy, don’t. I could feel the tension fill the room. It was all from me. I wondered if anyone else could feel it but no one else appeared to.

Aimee I have to, Andy said apologetically.

You don’t, but you’re going to tell them anyway. I wasn’t sure why I was being such a brat. It was nothing like me and Andy knew I wanted to find out why this was happening. He was only trying to help and I was being ungrateful.

    What happened? Michael asked.

Andy fidgeted, not wanting to do anything to upset me but also wanting to help. When Aimee was trapped by Evan, she noticed her attitude change.

    Change how? Michael asked.

In a more sinister way, I answered. I became more like Lucifer. When I fought Evan and Gina, I enjoyed it more than usual.

Do you want to tell him the last part?

    Not really.

She felt her anger and energy levels rise, it was more intense than she’s ever felt before, when she let the energy out she went up in flames, Andy explained.

Everyone was anxiously waiting for Michael’s response. You are becoming more like Lucifer. It is because he’s your father.

I know. It’s because God wants me to choose between good and evil. He wants me to get a taste of what it’s like to be evil so I can choose my path.

How do you know all of this? Michael asked.

I don’t know. I just do. Is there anything else we need to discuss?

No, Michael answered. That is all for today.

We left critical issues and found ourselves back in our Colorado home. After what happened at headquarters, I had a feeling I was going to be watched like a hawk for a while. I knew there would be lots of questions, not to mention the mistrust. If I had some evil lurking inside me, it could come out at any moment and ruin everything. No one wanted that to happen.

What was that Aimee? Andy asked.

Like I said before, my attitude has been changing.

It’s not like you, Mom pointed out.

I know I just couldn’t help it. It’s like I’m losing control of myself.

This could be a problem. Eve put a hand on her forehead as if this whole situation was giving her a headache. I didn’t blame her.

    I know, I shouted.

Do you think there’s anything we can do? My mom put a hand on my shoulder in an attempt to be supportive.

I think she has to choose between good and evil before it stops, Andy suggested.

But I already know my answer, I said.

Do you really? Andy asked skeptically.

What do you mean? I was partially offended at what he was implying but at the same time I knew he was right.

If you truly knew your answer, you wouldn’t have these outbursts. There were tears in Andy’s eyes. This whole thing tortured him more than it tortured me.

That can’t be true, my mom objected. No one liked the idea, but we had to face the truth.

I tried to change the subject. Come on, we have a job to do.

We have to talk about this! Andy shouted.

There’s nothing to talk about Andy! I yelled.

Yes there is, Aimee. Andy forced himself to calm down. You don’t know which side to choose, and that’s a problem.

I liked watching Evan suffer, but that doesn’t mean I want to help Lucifer.

It doesn’t mean you won’t give in to those tendencies either, Eve pointed out.

I’m not going to start working for Lucifer! I yelled.

It could happen. Mom looked saddened by the possibility.

My heart sank just looking at how upset my family was over all of this.
