    SAFFRON SEDUCTION

In one recess in the chapel, there is a beautiful stained glass window. It is idyllic blue and pastoral green at its edges, though the colors are angrier within: red with blood and fervor, vivid against the pale colors of flesh. Jesus stands at its center, bowed with the pain of crucifixion, and naked but for the strip of fabric at his hips.

In the many years since I took my monastic orders, I have often gazed at this picture. Like schoolchildren daring themselves to cross a liminal threshold, I have scrutinized the glass to check my own body for the reactions which might arise. I examined the naked form of this man I love, fearful of the responses of my body to such stimuli.

I have probed this desire of the flesh like a child worries a loose tooth. And I was expecting to fall.

    But I didn’t.

I may have felt a mild curiosity when I gazed, but no more. No desire; no indulgence; no passion. Nothing.

I have never felt yearning when I looked upon a man, not once, and so I felt blessed in my calling to the Lord. Privileged with the sanctity of my virtue.
