Turkey Story with a Twist
Hello lovers of the great outdoors. My name is W.C. Hoffman, and I would like to take a few words to express my excitement in regard to this book.
Loose Fletchings features hunting stories and adventures that usually have a heavy dose of humor accompanying them. After all, hunting is not all about the harvest. The journey is an integral part of who we are as hunters, and sometimes the journey’s path is an unexpected one. It is only fitting that my first story has such an outcome.
In the spring of 2001, I was lucky enough to gain hunting permission on a prime piece of land in southern Genesee County. The sixty-five acres held an abundance of both hunting and trapping opportunities.
I had decided this particular year I would finally take my bow into the woods and chase Mr. Longbeard. After a few weeks of pre-season scouting, I had the flock pretty much figured out. As the dark of opening day gave way to a glorious sunrise, multiple gobbles electrified my soul.
Tucked into the thickness of a blow down, I purred softly on my slate and was cut off quickly by Mr. Longbeard’s thunderous retort. I could soon see him on the roost as merely a shadow in the pre-dawn light. His beard hung proudly, silhouetted against the dim sky of early morning and with his response to my calls, there was no doubt he was the stud bird I was after.
Not long after the last owl hoot of the night, the air exploded as the tom’s wings set and he flew down into the field adjacent to me. With his feet now on the ground, my calling intensified and his responses were just as aggressive.
Yelp, Yelp – Gobble Gobble Gobble.
After two sequences he was hooked and headed my way. Due to a slight rise in the terrain, I would not be able to see him until he was just about on top of my decoy. This was not ideal, but it would give me the opportunity to be set and ready prior to his deadly date with my
