There is a wonderful sense of excitement that comes with knowing the conditions on your favourite piece of estuary are about to come good. Be that a big spring tide in February that, at its peak, will flood those last and highest tufts of grass, drawing the wigeon and elusive pintail up to the uppermost edges of the merse. Or maybe the impending arrival of a rare northerly gale, which pushes fowl away from the inland floods and into the sheltered creeks scattered across the foreshore.
