Camping In Snow – No Better Time

The weather had been rough all week. Cyclone Lola had just hit Vanuatu and the North Island was getting another lashing of rain and high winds. Snow swept up from the South of the Mainland bringing freezing temperatures and strong Southerlies. No better time for an adventure in the backcountry! It was also the weekend of the RWC final (you know, the one with the new TMO?)! The plan was formed: walk in Friday, fish Saturday in clear weather and walk back that evening in time for the Sunday match.

I finished packing my bag as snow flakes continued to flutter down, then completed the important task of letting family know my plans and to assure them I wasn't crazy. There was always a hut if the weather turned really bad and plus, I've got confidence in my gear. As well as the Personal Life Beacon I carry an emergency bivvy bag, medical kit, and cold weather camping setup aka a tiny tent. I
