About the Author
Part One
My Malay Side
Even with a language barrier
we have our special bond
we connect through pictures and food.
I remember as a little girl
you let me sleep with you
each time I’d fall asleep
stiff, scared to move, but loved
in your hugs.
I remember you gave me
a scarf of yours
yellow with orange flowers and green trim
the soft, somewhat rough material
in my hands or wrapped around my head
I will always think of you.
I remember you taking me on a drive
Going down the street to the market
The warm, fresh feeling of bread
being made engulfs me.
I remember you always
as I think of my next trip to Malaysia
to my second home.
Both Grandmothers
I remember my grandmother loves to travel
once went to Palestine
she didn’t get to meet the extended family
of her eldest
