Chapter 1

There is a ringing in my head that stirs me from the deep sleep I’m having. At first I’m not sure if the sound is real or whether it’s from the dream I’m having that includes a fire truck and a jet airplane. It also includes Trent and me in a passionate embrace with no worries of ex’s or brothers or hiding.

It isn’t until I slowly peel my eyes open and realize the darkness of my bedroom is broken by the faint flash of my phone next to me that I realize the ringing is real.

Trent.

I smile as I sleepily put the phone to my ear. Hey gorgeous, I was dreaming about you.

I wait to hear his voice on the other end of the phone but instead I hear a clipped cough. Juliana, it’s Reeve.

Reeve?

I’m still too sleepy to understand why Reeve would be calling me this late. Or is it early? I glance at the clock on my phone. It’s four a.m.

Jules, Trent has been arrested. He’s at the police station now.

Arrested? I sit up and rub the sleep away from my eyes as I try to make sense of what he’s saying. What for?

Reeve pauses and I can hear him grunt in frustration. Nobody is telling me anything yet.

Trent has been arrested? The realization is only just starting to dawn on me. I push the covers away from my body and swing my legs over the edge, ready to get up if I need to. Where are you now?

I’m still at my house waiting for my driver then I’m heading to the police station where he’s being held. Do you want me to swing by and pick you up? I have to find out what the hell is going on.

Yes. How long will you be?

He curses under his breath. I wish I wasn’t so far away. An hour, maybe sooner as there won’t be much traffic at this time.

An hour. Yes. Okay, I’ll wait outside.

I give him my address and hang up as I stand and walk over to the closet in a daze. It doesn’t make sense that he would be arrested. What happened last night? I should have been there with him. A cold chill runs through my body making me shiver even though it’s not cold.

I grab the first thing I can find and throw it on, not caring about what it looks like. It’s just a simple tee and track pants. Now is not the time to be concerned about my looks.
