The Lowdown on Going Zen
In all of its paradoxical manifestations, Zen refers to a form of Buddhism that attempts to have your mind let go of the need to use words and reasoning in order to understand things. Zen promotes the practice of meditation for us to understand the truths imparted by Buddhism, one of which is the importance of freeing our minds of thoughts that are not what they seem.
Contrary to popular belief, meditation in Zen is not about the ability to think deeply about things; rather, Zen implores us to meditate in order to let go of the notion of thoughts. It further stresses the need to let any thought that comes to our minds pass through; to allow thoughts to stick to our minds is not Zen.
The Ways We Benefit from Being Zen
In spite of Zen being highly philosophical, deciding to practice it provides us a number of practical gains.
Streamlined Way of Living
Zen allows us to realize that living without being captivated by material things is possible. Through meditation, our minds will be able to tell the difference between needs (survival basics like food and shelter) and things we can do without (15 flavors of ice cream and three window treatments). Living the simple life allows us to focus more on necessities like fulfilling our commitments to our families and friends.
Deep Appreciation for Life Itself
The meditation techniques used in Zen provide us the means to enjoy life for what it is, instead of being on the lookout for the next best thing. We learn to appreciate the joy that we can gain from engaging in our daily tasks. Zen also teaches us the value of observing nature and deriving peace of mind for doing so. By going Zen, we are able to take pleasure in living without the need to be entertained.
Increase in Self-knowledge
Spending our time in meditation while on Zen provides us a way to acknowledge our hidden fears without dwelling on them. All of us have something at the back of our minds that bothers us from time to time. By going Zen, we are allowed to let those uncertain thoughts pass through our minds, to let them go
