    Henry Chimpman’s Diary Entry

    Day 2,018

It has been two thousand and eighteen days since I was locked in this cage. I miss my family …

    Tom’s Diner

It was 1958, the winter after I was cut from the New York Chimps. I was sulking around the house, some days not even getting out of my pajamas. But one morning for no particular reason I woke up ready to take on

    the

    day

    .

I took a walk to get a cup of coffee and the paper at the local coffee shop, Tom’s Diner. The weather was mild for a November morning.

I loved Tom’s Diner. My family had been going there since we first came to New York. I always thought it was funny that it was called Tom’s Diner because it was owned by a guy named Richard. Whatever his name was, he made the best cup of coffee and the best scrambled eggs on Long Island.

    enjoyed

    it

She tilted her face up to the sun with her eyes closed for a moment as she adjusted the bag on her shoulder. She was the most beautiful chimp I ever saw. I held the door open for her and then quickly sat down next to her at the counter.

I ordered a coffee and told the woman behind the counter that I would pay for whatever the chimp sitting next to me ordered.

    That’s not necessary,

    she

    said

    .

You can pay me back by keeping me company, I said. I had never been so forward in all my life. I am usually a very shy chimp but something just took over that morning.

I paid for our coffee and when the waitress slid the change across the counter,
