Day 1,402
For that last few days the same kid has come by my cage to sketch me. Well, not a kid but more of a young adult. I refused to look at him, showing him only my back, but he was persistent.
I overheard the penguins mention that he was trying to get into art school. His name was Nathaniel.
I had no use for him, but he kept coming back. He kept trying to talk to me but I just kept ignoring him.
Today he brought me banana-flavored pellets … that won me over. I let him draw me and started telling him about my life.

Introduction
On September 12 , 1962, President John F. Kennedy addressed an audience at Rice University to discuss the United States’ involvement in what he referred to as the space race. Listening to the president’s speech on the radio that day, I was crying into my bowl of cereal. It had been exactly one year since I was kicked out of the Mercury Space Program.
I was supposed to be the first chimpanzee in space and a hero. Instead I am stuck in a city zoo. I have a wife and daughter who I haven’t seen in years, and the United States government has basically erased me from history. I exposed the space program—their cruelty to animals, and the fact that NASA gave all of the credit to the humans and ignored the chimps who were doing all the work.
It was President Kennedy’s job to convince the American public that we needed to explore space. Kennedy was a young president and it was his dream for America to go to the moon. He was an optimist, but truthfully he must have been a bit ignorant not to realize that so many lives would be lost, and that so many animals would be
