I want to thank Diane Wolfe, with Dancing Lemur Press, for partnering with me on this publishing project for our 3rd year in a row. Your partnership and generosity of your time and resources have been foundational in defining my educational career. You inspire me and my students as you teach them about writing. Thank you for showing them real-life applications and success in the writing field.

I also want to give a special thank you to the Bright Ideas education grant program, sponsored by North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives. It is because of their inspiration and generosity that teachers can implement such creative projects in the classroom! Their funding has made it possible for the 5th grade students at Greenwood Middle to become published this year and receive a copy of their beautifully published work at no cost to the student. Thank you!

    Rise of the Elements

    By Timothy Worthington

In year 3073, a boy named Peter finally had the courage to escape the evil planet Toshem.

Peter did not know why he felt so different, alone, and unlike everyone else on Toshem. All he wanted to do was leave as fast as possible and get far away from Benson, his father. Benson and his evil ways had taken all the natural resources from the planet and left the people with nothing.

Peter took one of his father's space pods to go to the nice blue planet he had seen from his telescope. On Earth, two brothers were in the woods looking for pieces of metal to build a spaceship. When the brothers looked up at the sky, they saw a big ball of fire coming straight down to earth. Peter had lost control and had only one option, and that was to crash. Peter was unconscious and trapped inside of a burning space pod.

The brothers sprung into action and quickly put the fire out. They noticed that there was a boy inside the pod when the smoke cleared.

The brothers took the boy, who did not look much older than themselves, to their garage to patch him up. Bryce, the older brother, knew how to fix Peter up because he had been taught by his father to heal people. While Bryce was healing the boy, DJ, the builder, decided to go back to the wreckage to take some parts from the space pod to finish what they had started.

While Bryce was working on the alien boy, he noticed there was a seal that read Peter. As Bryce removed that seal from the body, a flashing device with four different colored orbs appeared.

DJ came back from the ship and saw the flashing device and said, It looks like a tracking device!

Seconds later, Peter woke up with the orbs glowing as bright as a star. They read water, air, fire, and earth. Peter, with no hesitation, yelled, I'm being tracked!

From a far distance, they heard a loud boom. Peter thanked the brothers for saving him. He let them know that he has left a planet far from here for reasons they will soon find out, and if they choose
