    Introduction

This second edition of Write, Publish, and Market eBooks is a major amplification of the information I originally offered Free to my readers in the first edition. This new version comes a step closer to providing all the information you need to start your career as an independent or self-published author.

It includes details about how to author both fiction and non-fiction eBooks. I have happily used Smashwords.com as my publishing software firm and I recommend it here but you can use any number of other publishers if that suits your needs better. I have no financial relationship to Smashwords except they pay me royalties when one of my books sells.

Making money writing eBooks is good and possible. Ironically, to generate income, we need to forget about money. Instead, we need to concentrate of what our readers need, to think about our target market:

    1. Make our readers feel better

    2. Help them solve a problem

    3. Educate them

    4. Make them look better—health, nutrition, clothing, makeup

    5. Give them security, housing, safety, health

    6. Raise a positive emotion, love, happiness, laughter, self-confidence

    7. Satisfy appetites from food to sex

    8. Enhance their dreams and give hope (DeMarco, 2011)

Keep all writings brief and well-organized–stating the problem, discussing the pros and cons and coming to a logical conclusion. Be honest but keep the writings positive, bold, authoritative and specific.

    Part 1 Writing

    Getting ideas

Finding a niche or target audience (Strathy, 2015)

Writing an eBook takes a lot of time and effort. You’re going to live with the characters and the world you create for a long time. So, don’t choose an idea you will get bored with or grow to resent after a while. Instead, look for writing ideas you can be passionate about – ones that are meaningful to you, that you will have fun working with, that you can feel proud to have written.

One way to open your mind up to great writing ideas is to think about stories other people have written that you have felt most passionate about. Ask yourself which books have given you the most enjoyment, changed your view of the world, or impacted you most profoundly? Make a list of these favorite all-time stories.

Then look over your list and ask yourself what these books have in common.

    Genre

Do you prefer romances, mysteries, or science fiction? Historical novels, fantasy, or some combination? Keep in mind that most genres have loose definitions and tend to overlap with other genres,
