If you’re writing fiction with the intention of selling your work, wordcounts are what count. Always have, always will.
The question is, what do you want to write – that is, short fiction, novels or something in between? This isn’t an idle question. As with anything that has a potential market, you have to know what you’re aiming at, because the markets are very different.
With magazines, for example, most short fiction lies somewhere between 500-2,000 words, with a few accepting longer works, especially with serials.
