The Strange Stories of Mr. Murkadew

    Book II:

    A Strange Summer

Mr. Murkadew is the strangest friend I have ever known. I remember one hot summer when the guys and I were talking to Mr. Murkadew. His stories started one Saturday evening; it was a little cool with the blowing air, considering it was summer, the first week in June if I remember right. Some summers the guys went swimming but this summer the city pool was being fixed and everyone had to wait for the workers to finish the repairs. But I looked forward to Mr. Murkadew’s strange stories and I never knew for sure how truthful his weird stories were. Then again he was a strange fellow and from the stuff that he built I had to say he was also a very smart person. I just don’t know how he got all that knowledge and how he knew as much as an engineer and how he worked more like some kind of wired genius scientist, I think. I kept wondering how he managed to come up with all those strange stories and weird contraptions he came up with and built.

Well, let me tell you about the strange stories we heard on those summer evenings. Mr. Murkadew as usual sat on his porch, instead of a fan facing him he had a grey portable air conditioner blowing down the wooden porch. Now that I think about it, it did feel cool, kind of cold in fact. As soon as he started telling a story the guys moved in and squeezed close in for the cold air rushing along the porch and to better hear the stories because we all wanted to hear his strange tales. He always told us one of his extraordinary stories when we visited and he always had plenty of desserts, and some of every kind like ice cream, chocolate frosted cake, lemonade and other refreshments, and different kinds of cookies, too. I personally liked the chocolate flavored desserts and also the strawberry tasting ones. I don’t know where he got all the dessert and stuff, but he always had something different including pies baked with different fruits that had savory flavors. Here are some of the strange stories he told us. The guys always talked about the latest story when we walked home and for the next days or until he told us a new story, strange as they were, we enjoyed each one and the party food was great, too. I hope you will enjoy and remember the strange stories like I do. Most new friends I make and tell them the stories think that I made them up, but no, the stories came straight from Mr. Murkadew, a good friend, and the strangest guy I have ever met.

    Needlenose Garfish

Mr. Murkadew turned his head slowly and looked around then smiled, "I remember the time that my hook tangled with a longnose gar, some people know it as a needlenose gar found from the east coast and into Central America. It is a primitive, 100 million years old fish, a ray-finned from the gar family. My friend and a good fisherman says it is found in freshwater lakes in places like Kansas, Texas, and southern New Mexico, although
