Prologue

Peter Blunt policed for profit. Government control of policing lost out. Private business had overtaken and won the job of enforcing civil law. Contract work for law enforcers lasted six months, max. No job security, pension, or health care to argue about. The government, the protectors of the people, had given the job of policing and enforcing civil law to the civilian creeps, the profit makers.

The old timers in the ranks saw it coming. Everyone, including union efforts fell flat. In his favor, Peter Blunt figured the corporations and company businesses did pay for all equipment and supplies needed for the job.

The catch, live to collect, die, and you got squat. A crusty, dirty, business, dangerous for sure, but that’s why he selected assignment, those that provided the high risk pay.

Most of the guys who started with Peter Blunt were dead. The long stretched corridor he cruised stood as a reminder of other enforcers gone before him. Some people preferred to call the policing or enforcing men space warriors because they took jobs on different planet. Laws changed from civilized planet to civilized planet.

Peter Blunt considered a desk job that came with heart attack, ulcers, or stroke, they were no worse than a ripped throat from a sneak attack. No, Peter Blunt figured, death from direct weapons fire seemed a better way to travel. Peter Blunt stepped square, shrugged his shoulders, his facial expression clicked. He knew that human life follows its own cycle. Enforcement burned and boiled in his blood. He knew it and did it well. His name carried weight and his skills were prized in the wide open economic market and universe of profit and life. He had reached the status of Space Warrior.

Hey you! That’s right, you! It was a loud mouth big guy, unshaven, dirty, with springy black hair, in one of the multiple relaxation bars and grills, all space platforms had them. Peter Blunt relaxed quietly from his last job wondering whether to find another enforcer job to pay the bills. His finances dwindled faster than expected and if he was careful they might stretch for one more week before he was escorted off the recreational space platform and waiting transfer station that served for travelers headed to other parts of space. He ignored the loud mouth, but the loud mouth known as Carter refused to ignore Peter Blunt. Blunt looked at his current companion and enforcer also looking for work, Nelinda Flames.

Nelinda Flames was not the patient kind, Are you going to pop that loud mouth or should I, Nelinda Flames said, she checked the loud mouth with a quick glance and as she did he who took another drink as the two enforcers simultaneously sipped their drinks. Sometimes hotel rooms were expense or scarce and they ended up sharing a rented room. She was far from shy and straight forward when she wanted action whether a job, sex, or temporary company. Peter Blunt had ended up in the sack with Nelinda more than one time after a good meal and a few extra relaxing drinks.

Blunt looked at Carter who sipped a shot of hard liquor as he stood at the bar, the liquor was the kind of brewed concocted on space platforms, not the best, but cheap and smooth when chased by some flavored kind of club soda, also concocted on space platforms by the food processors and food chemists.

The loud mouth finally walked over to Peter Blunt’s small table situated near the long metal bar, the bartender stood behind the bar starring as he waited for drinks orders from the few people in the bar, this bar was one of several on the revolving station.

Hey! You deaf or just plain yellow? People quickly and quietly moved to the door way and made their way out and away from the rising disturbance. The bartender quickly buzzed for the platform guards, the button a direct signal against constant trouble from drunks releasing hot steam.

Nelinda quickly stood, Carter raised his right muscular arm and in a blink pushed her hard, the violent push sent her off balance, she fell back flat on her back momentarily stunned, she shouted, Shit! %$#@!!! as she
